The DV lobby has been at war with the 1980 Convention for a decade. At the 2023 SC Bernasconi, perhaps unwisely, proposed a forum. That will now take place in S A in June. Thank Heaven, Moylan LJ and Cobb J will be there to defend the Convention.
4) On a more personal score I have just published MY FAMILY AND I , part Autobiography. Copies are available from my email or from 1 Hare Court.
3) I gave the principal address at the ASIME Congress on International Child Abduction in Malaga 23-24/11/24. The event was exceptionally well run and it is to be hoped that CALA will commit to future meetings of these national associations of specialist lawyers.
2) On 18/10/23 I was fortunate to be invited to The Hague Conventions conference for European Academics convened by Professor Katarina Trimmings at Aberdeen University. In international family law studies she now leads our field.
I have neglected my account: 1) on 11/10/23 I was one of many speakers at the outstanding financial remedies AT A GLANCE CONFERENCE:
Today is the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Dawson Cornwall. I can think of no creation in my professional life that has made such an impact or given such distinguished service to those caught in cross border litigation or the complexities of international family law.
At the Conference these issues were presented with great clarity by Dr Camillia Kong and the challenges were perceptively explored by Sir Mark Hedley: very impressive work by all the research team.
The Judging Values and Participation in Mental Capacity Law Project held its concluding Conference at the British Academy on Monday. It rightly questioned what values judges bring to decision making and how they ensure the meaningful participation of the Patient.
On 31/3 Sarah Ingram of Winkworth Sherwood ran a very hard fought debate on transparency. Narrow victory for ‘against’ advocated by Stephen Trowell QC and Christopher Wagstaffe QC. A lively audience and all rewarded by excellent reception.
Dr.Katarina Trimmings of Aberdeen University ran a teams seminar yesterday on Parental Child Abduction in International and Islamic Law. This complex area illuminated in a brilliant lecture by Professor Anver Enron of Toronto University.
Rebecca Bailey-Harris QC so elegantly reviews A Divided Heart in the current issue of Family Affairs at pp. 92-93. To order the book email me at thorpe@1hc.com
HNW annual conference on 24/11 gave prominence to international family justice with my paper on cross-border cooperation in Europe post Brexit.
Want a good holiday read? Published this week my account of 7 years of rambling through Austria’s sublime landscapes. To learn more email me at thorpe@1hc.com and I will send you the flyer.
The final POAM conference from Munich today heard leading international family law scholars from all over Europe express their support for this project coordinated by Professor Trimmings and Dr.Onyoja Momoh from Aberdeen University.
In these barren times today’s POAM training workshop, so clearly presented by Professor Trimmings and Dr Momoh, was particularly appreciated.
IAFL led fortieth anniversary celebration of The Hague 1980 Convention attracted a global Zoom audience of 150. Technical fluency contributed to a very successful event.
In our specialist field she was the leading light of all the London lawyers. The firm John Cornwell had founded she greatly magnified and she will be greatly missed.
Very good news that the legacy of the great work done by Edward Bennett in editing the International Family Law Journal is now secure in the hands of Barbara Mills QC and Michael Edwards.
Despite the technical challenge on 19th June the Universities combined to present a very successful pan- European POAM meeting to replace the Milan Conference lost on 27th March to Corona virus.
