My unpopular opinion is that while the service cuts are unacceptable, the fare increase is relatively reasonable. SEPTA’s bus/metro fares (with SEPTA Key) should probably be $2.50-$2.75 to be comparable to peer cities, & the regional rail prices are currently incredibly low

Due to a lack of state legislative action, Philadelphia's SEPTA transit system faces a $240 m budget shortfall next year. The agency says that—without a solution—it will cut service by 20% & increase fares by 29%. This would be devastating to riders. cbsnews.com/philadelphia/n…

Some positive news: It sounds like Amtrak is pushing quite hard to get their new Acela trains in service by the end of the year and that it is actually likely to happen

This shows how MLB has done a good job at promoting walkability/transit (for a US sports league) The outliers: -Miami & LA have proposals to fix this -KC wants a new stadium to fix this -St. Pete has no rail -MKE & TX haven’t shown interest -Atlanta had this & just moved away

So I spent *way* too much time on this, but here's how long it takes to walk to the nearest train station at all 30 MLB stadiums

Detroit is really going to be falling behind within its own state if Ann Arbor has a better automated metro system by 2050

The University of Michigan released its Campus Plan 2050 for massive changes to the Ann Arbor campus 👀 Highlights include: • Innovation district • Automated transit system connecting Central, North, Athletic & Medical Campuses • Major redevelopment and facility renovations

CAHSR & NYC’s SAS are rightly targeted as examples of infrastructure projects that take too long & cost too much. However, there exists a ridiculous double standard, as the same thing occurs w/automobile infrastructure! This widening project is now $11.2b & will take 18 years

This morning, @TxDOTCommission approved construction bids for the state, including the first major work for I-45. Background: First road work for I-45 mega-project comes in $80 million more than estimated houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t…

Instead of widening an 18-lane highway, it may be time to revitalize the Midtown GO Express Line for quick crosstown trips w/the excess room in the CPKC ROW. Kipling/Stock Yards/Dufferin/Dupont/Summerhill/Thorncliffe Park/Sunnybrook Park/Lawrence East/Agincourt

NEW: Ontario is launching a “technical evaluation” to explore feasibility of constructing a new tunnel expressway for cars and transit under Highway 401. #onpoli

Yes, the people who want to live in the suburban utopia of… New York City? Regular reminder that Kings, Bronx, & Queens Counties are each more densely populated than any other county in the nation outside of Manhattan. Richmond County isn’t too far back as well

The City of Yes for Housing Opportunity is a slap in the face to New Yorkers, especially in the outer boroughs, who want to live in the suburbs, not in Manhattan. (1/3)

The fact that an 11-unit building can be converted into a 1-unit building without any issue & the reverse would take years of permitting & planning, with a decent chance of rejection, explains the housing shortage in our cities

18 Commonwealth Avenue, featuring 11 studio apartments, has been sold for $7,850,000. The address, located on the first block of Comm Ave Mall, will be converted into a luxury single-family home with garage parking.

I actually drive this stretch of highway quite regularly, and to say it is congested (in any sense of the word) is ridiculous. Even if widening solved congestion, this would still be a waste of money

NEW: As the MTA faces a $16.5 billion deficit, the Hochul admin is gearing up to spend over $1 billion on a highway widening that will save drivers...six minutes: nysfocus.com/2024/09/24/rou…

Clock-face schedules that still include peak express trains? Consistency between weekday & weekend schedules? Some Northeast commuter railroads have said that isn’t possible… Big congratulations to Caltrain for the new electric service & fantastic schedules

Welcome to your new electric commute. New Weekday Schedule: caltrain.com/?active_tab=ro… South County Connector (Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill): caltrain.com/southcountycon…

VT’s hostility towards development & reliance on tourism pushes so much of its housing stock to STRs, creating a huge housing crisis. For scale, neighboring NH, w/fewer tourists, has >3.5x as many Marriott, >1.5x as many Hilton, & 3.5x as many Choice Hotel properties

Ignoring the incredibly short height limit preventing apartment construction, Mission Beach permitting only 4 hotels & 1 hostel in an area known for attracting a ton of tourists is a recipe for Airbnbs galore

Airbnbs in Mission Beach, San Diego. 31% of housing supply here is entire-home, unhosted short-term rentals, almost all are investment properties. During a supposed "housing shortage".

Frustrating how fare free advocates never acknowledge these pilots demonstrate over and over again that fareless transit does next to nothing to shift trips from cars to transit. But that shouldn't be a surprise: these buses actually SLOWED DOWN instead of the promised speed up.

A 30% increase in ridership on weekdays. A 38% increase in ridership on weekends. A 38.9% reduction in assaults on bus operators. @SenGianaris and I write in @thenation about the successes of the fare-free bus pilot. thenation.com/article/societ…

Even if the Red Line was to be removed & the Green Line was cut above Woonsocket (to keep it all within RI), this might possibly give RI the best geographical rail coverage in the nation. You could probably also add a Washington Secondary line given how intact the ROW is
