The government is raising employer national insurance contributions to boost public services. The Low Pay Commission published evidence that most employers absorb higher costs without impacts on pay growth. Protections like the National Living Wage increase and new worker…

Today's budget is a vital first step towards the growth, jobs and living standards working people desperately need. The Chancellor was dealt a terrible hand by the Conservatives – economic chaos, falling living standards and broken public services. But with today’s budget she…

Ahead of Chancellor @RachelReevesMP presenting #Budget2024 later today (and @Steven_Swinford presenting it this morn), some thoughts on things to watch out for on #tax (and some things we might be disappointed not to see) 🧵 @CenTaxUK #taxtwitter

Rachel Reeves's first Budget: Tax * Employers' NI up 1-2 percentage points, threshold lowered from £9,100 - raises £20bn * Income tax threshold freeze extended to 2030 - raises £3.5bn a year * CGT on shares increased from current higher rate of 20% to around 24% - raises 'low…

.@MGSchmelzer second book 'the hegemony of growth' is brilliant and important. The cover and the title alone have already sold me on this newly issued translation of his first book.

Yes, finally, @MGSchmelzer's excellent first book on neoliberal monetary debates coming in English from @VersoBooks, the first translation of the @HPE_Project penguinrandomhouse.com/books/775572/f…

The government's employment rights bill is a big deal. From overhauling unfair dismissal protection, to getting zero hours workers onto secure contracts, to enabling unions to recruit in new workplaces, it could shake up employment relations.

Wow. @LulaOficial opens the #UNG79 General Assembly by describing the international financial system as "a reverse Marshall plan in which the poor finance the rich.” Time for a New International Economic Order 🤓 bit.ly/3Bfs1Pq

makes no sense to me - in the face of data showing in particular household demand down 0.3% on a year ago - that only one member is worrying about "subdued outlook for demand" and eight about "greater momentum in demand".

The Monetary Policy Committee voted by a majority of 8-1 to maintain #BankRate at 5%. Find out more: b-o-e.uk/3BaXjqD

Britain faces a pivotal moment. Our infrastructure is creaking, public services are collapsing, and we are falling behind other countries in the race to decarbonise. We can’t afford another lost decade. We need to start investing in the future.

What worries me @TomRailton1 is that we will simply announce a new "robust rule" and that will be the end of the matter until that fails. Not quite sure why we cannot have a specific inquiry to consider alternatives and invite comments from all. @jdportes @sjwrenlewis

As far as I can see none of the experts the Committee took evidence from actually support the rule change they propose. In fact many such as @jagjit_chadha @JoMicheII @gemmatetlow @JosephEStiglitz have been forcefully arguing the opposite point- that we need a long term view.
