Good to meet @IanMurrayMP today to reiterate industry disappointment over @hmtreasury decision to increase tax discrimination of #ScotchWhisky, and how we advance our shared priorities over this Parliament - backing the industry at home to succeed overseas #SupportScotch 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃

The tax discrimination of #ScotchWhisky is clear to see - and last month's @hmtreasury made it worse The Chief Medical Officers' low-risk consumption guidelines don't discriminate between alcohol categories, so why does the duty system? @jamesmurray_ldn | @IanMurrayMP

The Prime Minister @Keir_Starmer promised to “back Scotch producers to the hilt” The public agree the decision to increase duty on #ScotchWhisky - and deepen the tax discrimination of spirits - in the @hmtreasury Budget broke that promise

By any measure, spirits like #ScotchWhisky - and consumers who chose them - face discrimination under the warped @hmtreasury duty system With cider, you can buy more than x2 the alcohol and pay up to x4 less in tax than spirit A broken system, compounded by last week’s Budget

“Taxing alcohol by strength is not the right way to go about it.” @wendychambLD is absolutely right - @hmtreasury system means a 8.4%abv pint of cider (4.8 units of alcohol) has 8.3p per unit in duty. For a dram of 40%abv #ScotchWhisky (1 unit), it is 32.8p per unit 🤯

First Minister @JohnSwinney recognises that the @hmtreasury Budget "undermines the competitiveness of the #ScotchWhisky industry" at #FMQs 👇

It is, as @ProsperScotCEO rightly points out, a betrayal and other countries would not punish their homegrown successes in the way the the Chancellor inflicted a tax rise on #ScotchWhisky.

The Herald Budget Briefing: Sara Thiam, CEO, Prosper (right), says Scotch whisky duty rise is a "betrayal". "Can you imagine the French doing this to the champagne growers?" @NewsquestEvents @heraldscotland #Budget2024

"This is more than a broken promise, to many it will smack of a betrayal. Scotland’s national drink, and the associated investment and jobs, has been actively undermined and discriminated against." @MarkAGKent in today's @TheScotsman on the Budget 👇 scotsman.com/news/politics/…

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has been accused of breaking his promise to “back Scotch producers to the hilt”, after the Chancellor announced another increase to alcohol duty. Scotch Whisky Association's Graeme Littlejohn: "That's a clear break of the commitment." @Iromg

Today’s duty increase on #ScotchWhisky is set to generate £0 extra pounds this year. The duty increase on spirits duty last year has generated -£600m less than the @OBR_UK forecasts. This isn’t a money spinning move. It’s pain for no economic gain. 👇

Scottish Secretary @IanMurrayMP defended the alcohol duty rise "The inflationary increase is the right thing to do in these particular circumstances." So why the duty cut for beer & cider, which already pays 4 times less in tax per unit of alcohol than Scotland's national drink?

Ahead of today’s budget there was a clear unified call from across the chamber and by business organisations for the budget to #SupportScotch. Those calls have been left unanswered. @RachelReevesMP chose to abandon the pledge to back ScotchWhisky.

In 2️⃣4️⃣ hours we will know if #ScotchWhisky has been backed “to the hilt” in the @hmtreasury Budget Here is just some of the coverage over recent weeks backing a Budget that takes action to #SupportScotch 🧵 1/7

"It is a real betrayal of that commitment that the Prime Minister made" Graeme Littlejohn, Director of Strategy & Communications for @ScotchWhiskySWA, gives his assessment of the Chancellor's Budget:

The new OBR forecasts expect last year's duty increase on spirits to now bring in zero pounds extra revenue to the Treasury this year. £600m less than they originally thought. Today's decision to further increase duty will inflic pain on Scotch Whisky for no economic gain.

The moment @RachelReevesMP increased the tax discrimination of #ScotchWhisky in the budget - to cheers... Tax per bottle of Scotch Whisky will be at least £12 for the first time in history as a result of today's tax grab
