TL:DR: Communication facilitates therapeutic relationships & supports psychosocial well-being, engagement, & recovery after stroke. Relational communication is not a ‘nice to have’; it is critical in care. Now open-access: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

Does the communication between stroke clinicians and people with post-stroke communication impairments impact on therapeutic relationships? Our qualitative metasynthesis says YES and shows how this happens. tandfonline.com/eprint/RSSHDFI… (50 copies free, OA coming soon)

“We’re very good at teaching technical knowledge & rehabilitation tasks. Not so good at giving curricular space for relationships & communication.” Is this a universal educational failing, @flissbright? #powerskills

Can anyone point me to evidence around stroke-specific community rehab teams (cf. general community rehab teams who see people w range of conditions). Good evidence to support ESD teams. What about longer-term rehab?

Quite surprised the authors only found six papers that talked about the unintended negative consequences of knowledge translation. So important to consider these. @nickayes4 @ClareMcCann17 - of interest?

What a great paper! We need to acknowledge and talk about the unintended negative consequences of knowledge #translation “emotional labour, negative emotional or psychological sequelae, depression, anxiety, powerlessness, and frustration” tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

Can anyone point me to health journals which publish longer qualitative pieces (~7000 words). Looking for a home for an ethnographic study of future talk in patient-clinician interactions in stroke care. Target journal for this paper has just reduced its word limit 😖

Nice to finish the year with positive news, w/ HRC funding our research to embed communication accessibility into routine care in stroke services. Jointly led by @ClareMcCann17, Karen Brewer & myself, working with a fabulous research team to improve care for people after stroke.

I know therapeutic relationships and communication are often talked about as ‘soft skills’, but being invited to submit research on them to the Foams section of Frontiers in Soft Materials takes that to a whole new level. @nickayes4
