Scientist and Parent article, for other parents who don't have their children with them, for those who don't know what to say to them, and to thank everyone who supported @wallpiro and I. Thanks to @eLife for publishing and @Tanentzapflab for the quote. elifesciences.org/articles/49932

@tetheredtoed1 tagged me into this thread and rather than going down the comments trying to explain to each person what thresholds scientists have to meet to get federal funding, let me explain it in one thread.

Not all science projects that deserve funding appear immediately rational to the general public. I recall @SarahPalinUSA criticizing "fruit fly research" during the McCain campaign, seemingly unaware that fruit flies are the primary model organism in modern genetics research.

What's the current state of the art on IP-free fluorescent proteins? We are planning some strains to be distributed widely and IP-free for fungal pathogen imaging. @ATinyGreenCell @joachimgoedhart and please RT?

RNA biology is always so fiddly and complex, and increasingly I think alternative splicing is less about *protein* diversity and more about RNA transcript dynamics (eg, turnover, translation, cellular localisation)

Go forth and biotinylate! Great thread about a great method, O-MAP, for RNA proximity labeling.

And that's a wrap. I hope that any RNA-interested folk consider using O-MAP! And please reach out if you've got a project idea and would like some advice; we're always excited to help! Go forth and biotinylate!

Check out our large-scale effort to decipher Cryptococcus neoformans. >4300 gene knockouts, 142 genetic screens, 6 in-depth follow-up studies. One of many discoveries : a 53BP1-shieldin pathway thought previously to be vertebrate-specific. Much to do! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Python teaching advice requested: any particularly good or bad approaches to python installs for a 200-person undergraduate class? We need to do jupyter notebookes, numpy, pandas, seaborn; for biologists; backup for a uni server that we mostly use.

I just uploaded another project dataset (an RNAseq study) to SRA, BioSample, and BioProject - and along the way created step by step slide deck with screenshots of the process (web page captures and metadata tables, etc). Let me know if you're interested and I'll be happy to…

Anyone have any experience/recommendations for developing very focused workshops for bio UGs to learn R for data analysis? Focus needs to be demonstration that R is easy, relevant, useful and fun. Package recs? ggplot2, dplyr, tidyverse. What else?
