🔍🦠🦗 𝗣𝗵𝗗 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲! Work with me, @MartaShocket, and @maxjfarrell building information systems and large language models to capture key biological host-pathogen relations from literature - that could control crop pests or conserve biodiversity! 1/2
Wu et al recently shared that #WhiteNoseSyndrome (a global threat to #bats) has the potential to spread to the Southern Hemisphere, requiring urgent #biosecurity action.🦇 You can find their article at doi.org/10.1111/cobi.1… #wns #batconservation #batweek #conservation #science
In a new preprint with @mwtingley @MHCNeateClegg @BrettScheffers & many others, we ask: What is it really like to be a #speciesonthemove? Is the way we study them misaligned with how they experience the world? And could this misalignment explain why we can't better predict SOTM?

Some fun Friday news! This is my first official week back at the University of Edinburgh @SBSatEd as a @royalsociety University Research Fellow. My group will be working on wild animal microbiomes in the context of global change and I am beyond excited for this new chapter.
A global team of scientists including current and past EMD researchers have developed a new lineage system to help track dengue virus outbreaks across the world Find out more 👇 @viralverity @NathanGrubaugh #Dengue #genomicsurveillance #PublicHealth news.yale.edu/2024/09/27/new…
Chimney Rock village is devastated. It is now “a road to nowhere.”
1/5 Pic thread of damage to downtown Marshall, NC along the French Broad River. I have added Google Maps image locations as references. "Pictures do not do it justice." - Jacob Golden. First entering Marshall #NCwx #Helene #Appalchians #MarshallNC
National media hasn't grasped the severity of the flooding in Appalachia. Entire downtowns and highways are gone, homes washed away, many without power, cell service, or escape routes. We are one of the poorest regions in the U.S. and many won’t recover. Our region needs help.
The water receded at Biltmore Village today revealing the devastation. I have been in this area many times, and today it was not recognizable. Now that the water is gone the rebuilding process can begin #helene #ncwx #asheville
Pretty crazy visual of the damage.
Very happy to share that we’ve won an NSF Research Coordination Network grant to connect zoos and natural history museums on their collection-based biodiversity and conservation missions. newsroom.audubonnatureinstitute.org/audubon-nature…

Friday news: our @RSocPublishing Phil Trans B Special Issue is out!! Have a read if you're interested in any element of spatial and social behaviour and their interactions; thanks so much to all our wonderful contributing authors, and to my fellow editors royalsocietypublishing.org/toc/rstb/2024/…
Could reducing viral spillover into human populations actually INCREASE overall disease burden? Read more here, with mathematical models and an application to the Lassa fever system: journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/a…
Can reduced spillover of zoonotic pathogens have adverse consequences for human health? In a new paper we explore the possibility: journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/a…
Time to announce: I’ve just started a position as an Assistant Professor in Zoology (Animal Behaviour) at Trinity College Dublin @TCD_NatSci ! The lab’s gonna work on integrative studies of social and spatial behaviour and their effects on disease dynamics. Can’t wait.
