Had the backlighting switched on down on the Stour today after all those grey days- Dunlin looking tiny in with the Knot.

Rule 1 for Bewick's here on Stour is if they are a-coming, look out just after elevenses. Bonus feature was a brood of 5 DB Brent juvs- seeing a multi-pack quite a surprise this year.

Anyone missing those grey skies? I gave up on grey Knot with grey rings on on grey mud yesterday and went grebeing- turns out it was Black-necked Grebe powering up the Stour on the rising tide.

Bonus feature- I've really never understood shadows and reflections but here's the shape you get if a ceiling light shines on a Long-tailed Duck on a mirror.

Grey out there afternoons last couple of days-here's a Little Owl from Tuesday that I stuck on a fancy post with wires and stuff and then decided it looked better with a vicious crop.

Smart logo for the train doors this AM. Autumn godwit stats are now in and 95% (53/56) of c-ringed birds this season have previous history here. Just 3 first-timers, of which newie 1 and 2 were just a bit off track and quit the river within 24 hours. Newie 3 still here.

Just to register the return of the Knot in last week Oct as usual. Almost all marked birds here are old friends- most welcome this old stager from Norway, ringed as an adult in 2009 and seen here every season since I first starting jotting them down in 2013/14.

Bumped into that tiddler again a week later (17th), still looking fresh and meek compared to a leggy juv from the normally crew striding past.

One of those little late juvwits in the roost this AM- hasn't moulted a feather yet, only bird in 700 to be worried about a Red Kite and ended up cosying up to the Redshank.

There are two great ways to go birding; 1) live, in the field. 2) in great bird art. This new book by norwegian artist Axel Thorenfeldt is brilliant, with its mix of perfect ID plates, brilliant and artistic watercolours and loads of graphite sketches. Highly recommended. This…

Flanks fluffed like spun sugar on this rooster - you have to wonder how long a body feather must be to stick out this far and still be attached to the bird at the other end.

A bit monchrome this AM. Tho' I'm sure if Keats was spinning an autumn ode today he would have mentioned the Muntjac turds purpling with the ripening of the hedgerow fruit.

Thank-you to the kind folk xplaining that a godwit has x neighbours in flock (let's say 8) so the prob of bird B setting up camp next to bird A would be 8/999. A sub-committee is at work on an adjustment to 8/999 to allow for birds on the edge of flock that have <8 neighbours.

A bit of a dearth of mathematicians along the seawall this AM, so I am left wondering what the odds are that the 2 godwits with yellow over black in the flock of 1000 would be standing next to each other.

New shape combos in the big/white category on the river last few days- Spoonbills hanging out with the Mute Swans and hopefully not snorkelling up anything their immune systems can't handle

Nice to report some juvenile godwits bunking off the high tide roost this evening to feed on barley left behind by the combine- still looks like not a bumper season for juvs though.

Tweet Image 1

not sure how many we will get as yet, but lovely to see the juv godwits are starting to flight into the stubble to feed on barley- first time there have been enough juvs here to get on it since 2018 (I think)

The unbridled hedonism of the artistic life- under pressure to get this one done before Antiques Roadshow kicks off.

Its that time of year when you haven't seen a Swift for a month but the Hobbies can still conjure them up like they have been on a trip to the corner shop.

Tweet Image 1

Could be the least efficient way of painting a Hobby ever devised- do a whole one in a big rectangle and then slap white paint over it until you get half of one in a small square.

Haven't settled into doing a proper Hobby painting yet this season, but meantimes here's a reminder of how much H leaning in to take the head off a Black-tailed Skimmer looks like an outtake from the Blues Brothers.
