Got my copy of Futures of Socialism through today, which I happen to be in! My piece explores some epistemological underpinnings of our current sense of historical motion and argues, via Lukacs, for a Marxist humanist assault on reification. Cheers @graceblakeley and @VersoBooks!

People’s worth isn’t determined by their ability to work. We all deserve a decent living standard regardless. Just under 1/4 of the UK population is disabled, and anyone could become so. Please, ditch “strivers vs skivers” narratives and instead repair our social security net.

Just incredibly bleak that when a Labour government is finally in power, disabled people still have to wake up to front pages calling them a blight on society.

Labour purged Faiza Shaheen, a brilliant economist from a working class background who loved her community. They justified this purge on grounds of quality control. This is the sort of Labour MP they think meets their standards.

EXCL: Landlord and Labour MP Bayo Alaba recently evicted a mother of two, making her homeless. The former councillor rented his properties to the council he served on to be used as homeless accomidation. My scoop for @_TheLondoner the-londoner.co.uk/labour-bayo-al…

A good point made here: The ‘left behind’ areas of Britain we hear so much about are not left behind. They are active sites of post-industrial capitalist exploitation. These areas have arrived. Poverty, lowered expectations and political alienation are the destination.

Basically bringing back ASBOs, which were so authoritarian in their criminalising of lawful behaviour and targeting of the poor and vulnerable, and so ultimately useless and unpopular, that *the Tory government* scrapped them.

As Director of Public Prosecutions, I saw the terrible effect of anti-social behaviour first hand - and fought for justice for victims. As Prime Minister, I am delivering on my promise to tackle it with new Respect Orders, so people face the consequences of their actions.

There it is. The Labour leadership is governing on behalf of BlackRock. They want to use Public-Private Partnerships to hand over control of our key infrastructure to asset management firms. You’ve seen what happened to Thames Water. They want that everywhere. Let’s stop them

I'm determined to deliver growth, create wealth and put more money in people’s pockets. This can only be achieved by working in partnership with leading businesses, like @BlackRock, to capitalise on the UK’s position as a world leading hub for investment.

This post is problematic for a number of reasons. A thread…🧵 1. For those attempting to make sense of Trump’s victory and the rise of the far-right across Europe - look no further than the PMs statement below. Whether you like it or not, the far-right has a set of common…

Arrest warrants have been issued against Israel’s leaders for one of the worst crimes of our age. But it’s not just Netanyahu and Gallant who should fear accountability. Western politicians and media outlets facilitated this abomination. New column 👇 theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Enjoyed this - much to think about

Reflective/speculative piece I wrote for NS on the changing class structure and what it means for organising/power etc. grateful to have such a good platform for thinking this stuff through

'Antifascist missiles' lol

Here's a clue. If we were "at war with a nuclear power" or indeed "at war" with anyone Parliament would have been given a vote on it. We supplied some antifascist missiles to an antifascst government is all. Let's hope they did the trick hey, comrade?

there is a lot for us to gain in the current right’s form, and everything to lose in compromising with their content

the only feature of the right that the left should be emulating is their absolute confidence in their ideas, their uncompromising commitment to spreading them, and their total focus on material and ideological victories

The latest Culture, Power and Politics discussion of UK (and US) politics, with me and @ProfAFinlayson, is now in the podcast feed and online at culturepowerpolitics.org/2024/11/19/us-….

If the left becomes unwilling to push for ‘fringe’ ideas, it will simply cease to exist. Every left-wing idea ever has started as ‘fringe’ - the left represents the consciousness of those with an emergent interest in challenging the hierarchies that structure all existing debate.

Child poverty is at its highest level since records began. Over 14,000 children have been pushed into poverty since Labour took office. Their refusal to scrap the two-child limit is exacerbating the problem. A national scandal.

I mean, if this is the kind of obtuse non-argument that you get, you can see why some radicals have a problem with electoralism. As though the record levels of imprisonment in the UK and concomitant overcrowding is not a huge problem, and not a *class issue*. Pls be serious.

Good thing 'not putting criminals in jail' isn't worth fighting for in an economy where working class people are struggling to eat.
