One of the things we highlight in this paper is why certain codes are able to outperform even JIT compiled codes in other languages. Why can the ODE solvers in #julialang #sciml even outperform Numba-accelerated SciPy calls? If you count the operations it becomes very clear.
Very pleased to share our latest preprint: Julia for Biologists #julialang opens up new possibilities for biologists (computational and beyond) and we discuss how and why. arxiv.org/abs/2109.09973
This article enlightened me today. Now I understand why statisticians and coastal engineers apply the Peak-Over-Threshold (POT) method differently: The assessment of extreme wave analysis methods applied to potential m... sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Think of it this way: a group of people are in a mirror room, where there are many reflections of them everywhere. Prime numbers are the people themselves. The other numbers are only the reflections.
Floats tend to be overused by programmers. Almost every real-world quantity (time, money, sensor readings...) is actually quantized, and is better represented via integers (ms, cents, etc.) The only real use case of floats is scientific computing (physics, ML, simulations...)
Understand. Don't memorize. Learn principles, not formulas. 🧠
This course on "Introduction to Computational Thinking" is exceptional. Computational Thinking is useful for CS and machine learning students. Topics include image analysis, statistics, differential equations,... A fun way to start learning Julia. computationalthinking.mit.edu/Spring21/

My "magnum opus" for better SyntaxErrors is finished in time to be included in Python 3.10. Now when the interpreter shows SyntaxErrors it will try to highlight the full syntactic construct that is incorrect. This was quite tricky to do but I'm glad we managed to do it in time 😅
.@gnome 40 was released and I made a video to discuss all the features it brings. I used @fedora 34 Beta version (at the time of recording) in the video. Do check it out, and share it too. :) 🔗: youtu.be/0Rkwrl8v3Dc
With #JuliaLang v1.6.0 the package loading time for GR went down to 0.1 seconds. Simple scientific figures can be plotted in a few milliseconds, even with LaTeX labels: github.com/jheinen/GR.jl/…

I have just found out that MS Paint has a limit of about 85 megapixels. "Microsoft is reviewing this problem for a potential fix" since 2012 or before. 🤦♂️ support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/272…
