Christian First Principles
@christscibioThe Christian life through the lens of science, biology, psychology, and first principles.
The core of loving one another is understanding one another. If you don’t understand why someone does what they do, how are you supposed to be able to love them?
33,089 That’s what google said 33,089 different denominations. Are there really that many different interpretations of what really matters?
The church building fund != God
Does it make sense that the largest partition of time in a church gathering is spent listening to a lecture? It has been proven that a lecture is not a good way to learn. If learning is the goal, shouldn’t the time be used differently?
If you’re finding disunity in your church, it is probably a power struggle. Best thing to do is to spread power as thinly as possible. The passage doesn’t go, “…the greatest among you will make the most decisions.”
Having paid church staff and a building was never a requirement for a healthy church. Those are modern interpretations of how to do church - and that’s okay as long as we recognize it as such.
Totally agree. Caused by our English translation / interpretation.
A classic.
There’s no mention of the smallest size a church can be other than: Where 2 or 3 are gathered in my name, there I am.
If the Bible was all we needed, it wouldn’t be better if the Holy Spirit came.
It’s interesting that so many churches have coffee shops. Coffee shops are often associated with academia and studying. Thus, turning faith into an academic pursuit. Neither Jesus nor any of the disciples were in academia nor approached faith like an academic.
Every denomination (including non-denominational) is wrong is some way. No one can hear His Spirit with perfect clarity, thus no one can interpret scripture with absolute perfection. This is the source of Humility. But, we should try to be less wrong all the time.
When you strip away all interpretation and modern ways of executing church, what you are left with is the First Principles. The essence The core The heart The purpose All found when interpretation is removed.
So atheist miracles happened 1500 times
The qualifications of Elders are clear - their duties/purpose/typical activities are less so. There’s a high probability that the way we currently interpret the role of Elder is very different than how it was fulfilled in a time without church buildings, denominations, etc.
All translations are infused with a non-zero amount of interpretation. Using tools like @BlueLetterBible to look at the original language allow us to reduce the interpreters to get a First Principles look at Scripture
Elder’s responsibilities in the Acts-era did not include building budgets, program staffing, determining youth activities. A lot has changed.
It’s okay to have an opinion about what isn’t clear in the Bible. Just remember that it is an opinion, a reasoning. The real truth may still be out there. Test everything (even our own beliefs) and hold onto what is true. 1 Thess 5:21
My first word in my prayer this morning was “Papa”. What was yours?
Did you learn how to pray by watching and listening to someone else? Or did you learn to pray by talking to God? No one taught me how to talk to my wife or daughter. Should I be learning how to pray by following other’s example?
