The focus from Conservative leadership candidates today on getting Britain building again is hugely welcome. We need more homes, transport links, and clean energy asap. But there’s some confusion about net zero 🧵

Two observations on the UK's historic phase-out of coal-fired power: 1. The UK got the order of operations right (unlike 🇩🇪): first priority is to phase out coal (then gas and only then contemplate retiring old nuclear) 2. The UK did this WITHOUT expanding the role of gas in…

This is the moment Ratcliffe power station came off the electricity system for the final time, marking the end of 142 years of coal generating electricity in Great Britain!

I think this is a really important point; Starmer didn't structure his campaign and indeed his leadership to win the most votes, he structured it to achieve power. All the stuff about the wide-but-shallow victory has to be understood in this context. /1

Indeed. I'd prefer a voting system that rewarded parties for the number of votes they actually won. But we don't have that system. So when we talk about vote share,we should remember that parties & voters alike are tailoring their electoral behaviour to a disproportionate system

I don't think a single journalist noticed it, but Labour's Darren Jones made quite an interesting announcement on infrastructure yesterday afternoon. They've pledged to merge the Infrastructure Projects Authority and the National Infrastructure Commission. Some thoughts.

I spent a week as a Deliveroo rider. And learnt a lot. First up, Deliveroo likes to claim you should earn at least the minimum wage of £11.44 while working. Me? I worked for 22hrs 50mins, rode 105 miles, did 27 drop offs and earned £120.38. That works out at £5.28 an hour🧵
