Sharing this again because I can’t stop thinking about @dylanwiliam’s prophecy that instead of planning for the jobs of the future we need to think about how to prepare young people for a life of leisure.
AI discussions usually struggle to sustain my attention but this is an exception. Dylan Wiliam starts with a well-stated but (I would hope) uncontroversial caution about AI and assessment, and then goes dark in the space of 10 minutes, ending with speculation that in the AI…

Last week, I talked to @MonashUni's @timbocop for one of his "10 minute chats on Generative AI". You can hear the conversation here: bit.ly/4hJz0Rq
Has the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check been 'effective' in England? This is an eminently reasonable and scientific answer, as we have come to expect from @Kathy_Rastle
Last week, the Education Policy Institute published a report finding no "discernible positive impact" of England's phonics screen on children's reading. My thoughts on this report are available on the blog: rastlelab.com/post/has-the-p…
In a recent substack post, @natwexler makes a thoughtful attempt to reconcile various views (including mine and @margaretmckeow2's) with her own about the utility of explicit teaching of comprehension strategies. Nat's framing of comprehension skills as being either biologically…
Great overview of the education systems in the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland from an Australian perspective … much to learn from each other for us all … the actual report by @buckingham_j is also a must read …
Last year I went on a magical literacy tour of the UK and Ireland, and earlier this year I produced a report. Thanks to Ollie for the chance to ruminate at length about it. We covered edu-tourism, curriculum, assessment, ITE, inspection, system reforms, and how culture interacts…
This was a fun chat with the one and only Ollie. Nice to have chance to explore what I learned on my great literacy tour. @ChurchillTrust
Have wanted to chat with @buckingham_j on the ERRR podcast for a long time. Finally got the privilege to do so this month! Jen shares a wealth of knowledge from her Churchill Fellowship trip to the UK and Ireland. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! ollielovell.com/jenbuckingham/
It’s been a bit of a confusing week of reading comprehension-related podcasts. But again and again every time I need grounding I return to this well-sourced paper from @buckingham_j so good fivefromfive.com.au/blog/dont-disc…
This is excellent news and a signal that NI is seeking to make positive changes for teachers, students and their families. There is a wealth of in-depth reports and reviews of education in NI but few focus on the curriculum. @lucy_crehan is a great choice to do this work.
I am honoured and excited to be conducting this review of the curriculum in Northern Ireland. Thank you @paulgivan for putting your trust in me.

Excited to announce plans for an inaugural “The Science and Art of Learning” conference in Scotland. Coming in 2025, more details to follow soon.
Not long now until what promises to be a thought-provoking event in Melbourne. With The Rt Hon @NickGibbUK, David Howes, Dr Edward Simons, @douglas_elena, @Rossefox, Tim McDonald, Lisa Holt, Sarah Asome, Dr @NathanielRSwain, Matt Wright, Michael Roberts, Adam Inder and Stephanie…
This question comes up often and this is pretty much what I say but Tim says it better, of course. Ping @CarterM_PTL @belinda_bristol
