Almost as though anyone who looked could see the Harris part coming, and anyone with familiarity with JD beyond their media caricature could also see that coming. It's also telling (I don't think this is The Reason), but the ticket overall turned around after the VP debate.

I still think it was a political master stroke. Gaetz is out of the House, doesn’t get DOJ, and there’s one less pain in the ass pushing for a Johnson ouster, for a more conservative radical Speaker of the House. And Gaetz is a civilian, looking for a job. Brilliant!
