I sometimes wonder if there are a lot more places like this, especially in North America

The way a lot of 1950s jazz sounds so good and real is a testament to great musicianship and audio engineering fundamentals Also shines light on how much extra stuff we’re doing now

The feeling when my mental desktop is full and cluttered

Measuring volume with SoundPrint app in studio Some songs will have the same decibel volume but sound so much harsher

this informed my thinking on like… even in a generally hostile commons, if you can find even one person to cooperate with, and do that publicly, and find others, you can create a growing oasis of cooperation in a desert of defection

You have to mix a song but without one of these: • EQs • Reverbs • Compressors What would you choose?

Maybe further evidence of this but I was just thinking of the idea of ‘post-literate’ the other day. A lot of people are getting by on social media without a lot of reading and writing (especially those who aren’t on Twitter) . A lot of youth using tech to get around it

Social media basically brought us to something like an oral culture: - We're not illiterate in the sense that we can't read, our writing approximates our speaking - Our writing isn't as complex because it doesn't function like text used to - We both archive everything and trust…

Some artists tend to be historians of music etc, others (most?) have a few favourites and just run with their own artistry

Do you believe that it’s mandatory for artists to study the artists that came before them?

Imagine releasing a new song by a massive artist worldwide without pitch correction

Does anyone ever think about how aesthetic it is that humans drink water to survive? Like, this clear, 0 cal, smooth liquid. Pure, minimal, sleek. It’s water, it’s giving Lemaire, it’s giving modernity, it’s good design.

one way of thinking about intuition is that it’s a sensitivity to the goings-on in complex web of relationships – you just know, you just feel when something is off, from experience. you recognize the limits of utterances and you know when to drop something if it’s not working

Life is full of wonder

We lost Quincy Jones today. He was 91. Quincy Jones’s moved effortlessly through different styles and genres of music, often bringing together what he called “a family of musicians” to produce some of the greatest music of the twentieth century. Here, in this interview (by Oscar…
