...won't complain as much as I would attest to it since that is where guys like I come in and we still – albeit indirectly perhaps – get to be part of knowledge creation and evidence generation

Academics would double our productivity if we learnt some basic project management skills that are bog standard in the industry. We have this myth that scholarly success is all about brilliance and creativity, but in fact 90% of it is getting sh*t done, same as any other job.

All expertise becomes outdated if isn’t supplemented with healthy dose of random curiosity.

...mathematical reasoning for the literary intellect :p

Krugman's right, which is a gut-punch to someone whose interest in economics came in large part from reading Heilbroner's *The Worldly Philosophers.*

"...can’t really do meaningful *evidence-based policymaking* without the kind of *policy-based evidence-making* that their (this year's Nobel laurates') work advanced"

Don’t normally have much to say about Nobel prizes, but I’m a big fan of this one. To someone drawn to economics by its ability to inform public policy, it would be tough to come up with better choices. Wouldn’t have put it this way at the time, but this is why I got a PhD.

This year’s economic sciences laureates have demonstrated that many of society’s big questions can be answered. Their solution is to use natural experiments – situations arising in real life that resemble randomised experiments. #NobelPrize
