3. We show that toothed whales have an air driven sound production system in their nose that works like laryngeal and syringeal sound production. So not muscle contractions like cat purring. The nasal phonic lips produce loud echolocation clicks when closing.

1. How can toothed whales make echolocation clicks with air at 1000m depth? And how can they use the same sound source for both ultrasonic clicks for echolocation and softer calls for communication? Check out our new paper in Science! science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

First sperm whale match between Ireland and the Azores!!! The stranded whale at Arranmore in Donegal last month was identified by Lisa Steiner from Whale Watch Azores as "2811" who was last seen off Faial Island on 24th September 2004!

🚨New paper alert!🚨 We've known for a decade that killer whale moms keep their adult sons alive. But how does this impact the moms? Turns out, quite a lot! Read more here (OA) cell.com/current-biolog… and see the thread below...

New paper - identity codas as symbolic markers of sperm whale clans - Congratulations @taylorahersh very chuffed to have been a part of this work!

1/10) Very happy to announce that our new paper is out in @PNASNews! We show evidence that sperm whale clans in the Pacific Ocean use identity codas as symbolic markers of vocal clan identity. Read the paper at: doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2…

Fantastic visualisation, albeit depressing. Sometimes you don't need a model nor statistics to see an effect! Apparently, life as a blue whale is not just blues, is full of death metal, literaly!

Very interesting thread about the case of the lone killer whale in Denmark

Ok so for those of you not in Denmark but interested in killer whales (#orca) you may not know about all the excitement that has taken place in Aalborg, just 10km from my home a thread: 1/x

Resident killer whales co-evolved with 80-100 Lb Chinook. An adult orca requires 250-400 lbs fish/day. Imagine the extra energy needed to catch 400lbs of scarce 12.5lb salmon (the new average size) vs needing to only catch 3/day. #FreeTheSnake @GovInslee @OrcaSOS @TheOrcaProject

Male Southern Resident killer whales must eat 25% more than females, making them vulnerable to starvation. Researchers found that their survival is not so much about what you know, but who! Dive into our latest article: ow.ly/vTpN50IAvXK 📸 © Stewart Macintyre

Two intriguing statements: "there were hundreds of orcas" and "the orcas followed their towed conspecific home". We don't know much about these orcas, but it seems unlikely to find them by the 100s. Pity we don't have video evidence. shorturl.at/xFGKQ
