Today our Europe Centre of Excellence brought together Whitehall lawyers to discuss key legal issues in UK relations with the EU. Delving into the reset, we explored implications for government lawyers, talked about the Windsor Framework, heard insights from Thomas de la Mare KC
Great to be at @UofGCILS yesterday to discuss international law as a profession. We look forward to our next opportunity to build even deeper relationships with the international law community in Scotland.
It was great to welcome Emma Hutchison from @FCDOGovUK back to her alma mater tonight as part of our @UofGCILS International Law as a Profession series. Thanks to Emma and to everyone who came alone and asked interesting questions.
It was a busy 2 weeks for Team UK in New York & Geneva. At the UN, we discussed UK views on key international law topics & supported Dapo Akande’s campaign for election as a judge to the ICJ. At #RCRC24, we reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to International Humanitarian Law
Delighted to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by respective Chairs of the 🇬🇧 National IHL Committee and the 🇺🇦 Interagency Commission on the Application and Implementation of IHL, as part of our efforts to help strengthen the domestic implementation of IHL.
#RCRC34 agreed 5 resolutions on international humanitarian law: -Promoting culture of compliance with #IHL -Tackling the human cost of ICT activities in armed conflict -Strengthening the role of local communities -Managing impacts of national disasters Now the real work begins.
The resolutions passed at #RCRC24 will progress global commitments to international humanitarian law and support locally-led and preventative action to save lives. Alongside our partners the UK is taking action to alleviate the suffering of people trapped in crisis and conflict.
At #RCRC24 in Geneva we are making clear that international humanitarian law must be respected. Hear more from FCDO Legal Adviser @SLangrishFCDO ⬇️
UK Government continues to collaborate with the @BritishRedCross to provide practical assistance to selected States who wish to produce their own voluntary reports on IHL implementation at the domestic level. gov.uk/government/pub…
The UK is delighted to be in Geneva to support #RCRC24. International humanitarian law is the essential body of rules which regulates armed conflict, protects civilians & people who are not, or are no longer, participating in hostilities, and limits the methods & means of warfare
The Attorney General marked #InternationalLawWeek by making his first official visit to the @UN, where he officially endorsed @DapoAkandeLaw’s campaign for election as judge to the @CIJ_ICJ
FCDO Legal Adviser Sally Langrish emphasised the UK commitment to international law while delivering the UK statement to the 6th Committee of the General Assembly on the work of the ILC.
“There has never been a more important moment for us all to reaffirm our commitment to international law.” 🇬🇧 UK @AttorneyGeneral in the UN General Assembly. That’s why the UK is proud to nominate @DapoAkandeLaw for election to the @CIJ_ICJ for the 2027-2036 term.
We enjoyed contributing to the @UniStrathclyde workshop, “What can international disaster law learn from global health law”, with presentations on the ILC Draft Articles for prevention of disasters & emergencies, treaty-making, Pandemic Accord, & One Health international policy
Huge thanks, on behalf of the @LCIL2024 Steering Committee, to London Conference on International Law co-convenors, sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, volunteers, events production team, and all delegates, both online and at the QEII. See you in 2026!
Sally Langrish, FCDO Legal Adviser & Chair of #Lcil24 Steering Committee has closed the 3rd London Conference. It has been an incredible 2 days of inspiration & insight from experts on the interlinkages, methodologies, substantive issues, & the future of international law.
FCDO Legal Counsellor Helen Mulvein chaired a #Lcil24 panel on energy security. Experts considered the many legal issues raised by attacks on energy infrastructure & trading routes - & proposing ways in which the international legal framework could be strengthened.
A panel of experts, chaired by FCDO Legal Director Paul Berman, is currently discussing the ways the international community makes rules for space against the backdrop of a challenging geopolitical climate and how it tackles the issues of governance, security & resources #Lcil24
