Watch our interview with Prime Minister Chris Hipkins here! This is the final of our specials with political leaders (excluding Christopher Luxon who declined to be interviewed). You can view the rest of our interviews in this thread below youtube.com/watch?v=KdlFRy…
Please vote, and vote left. We are on a knife edge between the most progressive Government New Zealand has ever seen, and the most lazy conservative right-wing Government who are only interested in benefiting the wealthy.
This election is still close. As Audrey Young says (nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/el…), Labour/the Greens/Te Pāti Māori would have 61 seats & National/ACT would get 59 if: - Labour rises by 2.1% - Greens rise by 1% - National falls by 1% - ACT drops 1% - NZ First drops 1% - TPM unchanged
National has taken a good hard look at the issues facing New Zealand and come to a tough decision: we need to make things more difficult for poor people | @HaydenDonnell thespinoff.co.nz/politics/27-09…
If you come out claiming you care about delivery and outcomes, as National is doing, you can’t also promise a suite of policies - more sanctions, 90-day trials, no-cause evictions, boot camps, 3 strikes - which have been proven to be failed policies that don’t improve outcomes.
Worth recalling that the latest, most comprehensive evidence shows sanctions absolutely do not get people back to work more quickly – indeed they may *slow down* that process, as well as causing misery to people and their children. twitter.com/benmackey/stat…
great question from Derek Cheng: "Do you have any evidence that sanctions shift that dial to get people back to work?" Luxon: "I think they will."
9/11 Familes United chair Terry Strada tells CNN that Jamal Khashoggi "was a potential witness for the 9/11 families" in their lawsuit against Saudi Arabia" and was scheduled to speak to their lawyers again when he was killed.
Lots of people tweeting NZ's low OECD rankings at me this morning might be interested to know that ALL the top OECD "better life" ranked countries all have Capital Gains Tax and fairer tax systems, meaning that they can invest in strong public services like health and education.
The UN released a "global stocktake" taking a hard look at the state of our planet In short, we are still sleepwalking to a world we will increasingly not recognize It has 17 key findings which I've tried to translate into non-UN speak THREAD

Jack Tame challenges Chris Luxon on why, in the middle of a cost of living crisis, National plans to fund cuts for landlords. Renters United president Geordie Rogers said Luxon’s property portfolio, currently valued at over $16m, should be considered a conflict of interest.
This thread sums up how I feel aswell - in addition to making Matariki a public holiday & starting the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care, both important and positive steps and neither of which National would have done. They're obv not perfect but the alternative would be dismal
For the past 5 years, National has been running the line that Labour has a delivery problem. It's a powerful gaslighting tactic that the public and the media has bought into. I'm no Labour fan, but I'm 100% sure they've delivered more in the past 6 years than any other govt in...
We are the best in the world…at having the highest share of renters paying more than 40% of disposable income in rent. As featured here: economist.com/international/… Can YIMBYs ease the global housing crunch? from TheEconomist
personal news! last week was my final one as the guardian's aotearoa new zealand correspondent. it's been a huge privilege and I'm so grateful to those who shared stories. i wanted to share a brief 🧵 of coverage that's meant a lot (and urge you to apply to replace me - ad below)
Why would you raise a concern as a renter that Healthy Homes Standards haven't been enforced in your flat - that you don't have basic heating and insulation - if you know your landlord has the power to evict you without reason? This is a policy the UK Tories just scrapped.
It's horrific to see National committed to introducing no-reason evictions for landlords. A massive transfer of power to landlords, in an economy already tilted towards speculators and landlords, which (as Emily Writes has said) makes ineffective all other renters' rights.
Why is @ElonMusk silent on Saudi man sentenced to DEATH for his Tweets by X’s second largest owner? Cc: @mtaibbi @lhfang newsweek.com/elon-musk-sile…
Inequality is a political choice. Greens: Change tax system so those with $$$ pay a little bit more to lift EVERY FAMILY out of poverty. Nats: Charge disabled ppl & students double for bus fares to cut taxes for millionaire property speculators. 🤔✅
