What’s important is that our young have a balance of learning and reading about events in the world. Street Angel has provided our teenagers with a look into the lives of teens going through day to day life in Brooklyn and they can truly see themselves in the characters.
Where Brooklyn at? On the cover of my book, Street Angel, 16 year old protagonist, Moises Colon, is coming out of the Sheppard Avenue train station in East New York. He goes to Brooklyn Tech. #BrooklynStandUp
“They say dreams die first and I guess this is so, especially when you live in the ghetto”. Young Moises Colon writes sonnets to keep himself grounded and to chase the demons of the streets. How many of today’s youth can quote the words of poets like Keats, Browning or Whitman?
Words have power, life and death are in the power of the tongue. 16 year old Moises Colon has to navigate the mean Brooklyn Streets every day just to get to and from school and be a normal kid. He knows words are important and keeps a day to day journal of his life experiences.
Let’s go back to the roots of education and emphasize the primary force of learning—reading. It is the key to life.
Lucky’s lips parted into a knowing, ironic smile. “On the down low, money, I guess nowadays, even good kids carry guns.” Yeah, Momma, your 16 year-old son, a ‘good kid’ is buying a gun. I am leaving my journal for you, in case I don’t live to tell my story. Here is the prologue:
Gun in hand, coward in mind. This 16 year-old teen was recently shot and killed at a party. Our young are quick to settle disputes with weapons as opposed to using other means to solve conflicts, such as communication. It doesn’t take any courage to pull a trigger.
Many teens cannot relate to books that are required in High Schools because they don’t see characters that look like them and are close to who they are. Street Angel is the exception because it was written specifically for teenagers and they really love the story.
Bullets have no name. Once the trigger of a gun is pulled and the bullet is fired, it doesn’t come back. Listen to the opening of Part One of the story that is Pro-Peace, Street Angel, narrated by the author. on.soundcloud.com/kkr3HAZE9yZS3P…

As been said on many occasions, diverse stories are needed, especially in the YA genre to give our young a balance of the many cultures that make up our planet. Street Angel is the perfect novel. Set on the streets of Brooklyn, it follows the journey of 16 YO Moises Colon.
Young one getting his first look at the powerful story, Street Angel.
Remembering the late, great young adult author, Walter Dean Myers, who I proudly called a friend.
“Life is worth living, if you are for-giving”. The pen is mightier than the gun. Street Angel has changed the lives of so many high schoolers and young adults. It’s anti-gun violence message will stay with you forever. Celebrating its 25th year of publication. Reading is the key!
