Wonderful coverage of Dacre Stoker visiting his family tomb at St John’s Cathedral and unveiling a history display by Sligo Stoker Society
On a visit to Sligo, Dracula author Bram Stoker's great-grandnephew says he believes the town's cholera epidemic of 1832 inspired the novel
Today marks 125 years since the publication of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and we’re sharpening our fangs and pressing our capes as we speak ready for our @GWR! 🧛♀️ It’s going to be a night to remember. 🦇 Full details and timings here 👉 bit.ly/whitby-abbey-g…
DRACULA was published on this day 125 years ago. I will never forget my excitement on seeing Bram Stoker's handwritten research notes for the novel @TheRosenbach all the attributes of his famous vampire were laid bare and it changed the course of my research forever #Dracula125
#LoveSligo I've heard great things about @CarolineBusher from the @SligoStoker
We just had an incredible morning at Sligo Central Library with author, @CarolineBusher and first year students from Mercy College secondary school. Caroline read from her Sligo-set vampire book, The Legend of Valentine Sorrow, and students asked lots of curious questions.
Looking forward to participating in this… such an amazing lineup of speakers! Great to see renewed interest in 19th century cholera, continues to inspire the arts 🧛♂️ #cholera1832 @SligoStoker @ATU_Connemara @OFlynnATU @ATU_GalwayCity @GallagherSligo @atu_ie

#OTD d. Bram Stoker (Irish, 1847–1912). Best known for his Gothic horror novel Dracula (1897). Various editions of Dracula shown here. The one with the yellow cover is the first edition (check your bookshelves!). #OnThisDay #Dracula
Visited Hazelwood House today and got a tour of @athruwhiskey distillery, great conservation work on the house and innovative idea re-using the old factory building as a distillery. Exciting to see the future plans for it. Image: NLI
St Patricks Day in #Sligo in 1887 The National festival was observed with great enthusiasm and was honoured in a way worthy of the day. Vast numbers attended at the early Masses, and the National Hymn was sung at 10 am Mass in the Cathedral by school children
It will be great to have an indoor tourism attraction in Sligo town. #unlockingsligogaol estimated to bring 55k visitors. It will be interactive with the Treadmill Yard experience and the Executioner’s area. Also, re-using the Governors House and Marshalsea.
Béal na mBláth feels like the most depressing place in Ireland to visit. The ambush site seems to ooze sadness. Someone left this small statue of Collins at the foot of the monument and its been broken, which oddly chimes with the spirit of the place
Roofscape, Whitby, north Yorkshire, 1959, by Edwin Smith (1912-71). Noted for capturing the spirit of the places he photographed.
What a fabulous morning we have just had, with author @CarolineBusher and the students of @ursulinesligo, along with teacher Edwina Morris. We had a brilliant discussion about Caroline's new book, The Legend of Valentine Sorrow, a #vampire story set in both #Sligo & #Dublin.
'Cholera arrived in Ireland via Belfast, on 18 March 1832...claiming at least 50,700 lives before it finally abated'. Our thanks to Dr Fióna Gallagher @GallagherSligo @DCUHist_Geog for posting ‘Mapping the Miasma Ireland's 19th century #Pandemic'👇 tinyurl.com/2w6btdju
Did Bram Stoker draw inspiration for Dracula from a shipwreck of a Whitby boat on the coast of Sligo? jstor.org/stable/27075238
