Yesterday our “Conservation of coastal-breeding Plover” Workshop at the #IWSG2024 Conference in Montpellier, France, takes place! It’s an important step to connect plover scientists all over the world in an effort to shape conservation actions for plovers at our beaches.

We did it! Here's what we missed while we were sleeping. Before this year, the highest recorded 2-meter surface temperature for the Arctic was 5.694°C on July 26, 2020. This year: July 26: 5.696°C July 27: 5.813°C July 28: 5.907°C (42.63°F). Yay for us f&%king humans!

Yesterday, Antarctic sea ice extent hit a new record statistical low of -6.65σ below the 1991-2020 mean. About a 1-in-70B chance w/o climate change. This is not a graph of extent or anomaly. It is a graph of standard deviations -- a measure of how abnormal the year's data is.

Breaking News!!! North Atlantic sea surface temperatures set a modern-day record high yesterday at an average of 24.90°C (76.82°F), passing the previous record of 24.89°C set September 2-4, 2022. And there is at least another month of North Atlantic ocean warming ahead.

Healthy and buzzing #grasslands are disappearing at an alarming rate due to the overuse of pesticides, overgrazing, and their conversion to monocultural croplands. We call on the Members of Parliament to vote for nature and people next week at the plenary session on the EU…

Thanks to GPS tagging, we found that, in our site, incubating Kentish #plover females do not modulate foraging behaviour according to tide. They totally avoid foraging on the beach at night, likely to escape from long-eared owls link.springer.com/article/10.100…
