I love y’all, but dadgum... I’m scared that if we keep pushing down this road without being critical, then we’re going to wind up in some place we ought not be. I just hope we’re not there already.
We have to start asking how we are inadvertently propping up systemic inequalities by pretending we’ve suddenly reformed higher ed as an equal online space. It wasn’t equal in person!
Students with disabilities are voicing being left out of this online transition because the accommodations they need are being placed on the back burner. Students in areas without high speed fiber are left watching the screen freeze. Listen.
You know, the same one where you show your belief that a mechanic is less important than you, yet many of you don’t presently know how to change a tire much less a spark plug. Students are unemployed right now. Students are confused right now.
It’s the exclusive elitism we’ve experienced all our lives. It’s the genesis of that conference conversation I have with y’all once a year where you meet me and assume I must be a mechanic and not an academic because of my accent and my choice of footwear.
It’s a nonsensical position filled with uncomfortable self-promotion that those of us from rural spaces, from blue collar spaces, from working-poor families can’t understand. It makes us all so uncomfortable because it is elitism personified.
It’s that latter disposition that has broken higher education for much of the working class, and that needs to be said out loud.
Fellow academics, I’m going to be blunt: Some of y’all are doing brilliant work right now. Most of y’all are doing so without saying much of nothing. Some of y’all are so busy being so proud of yourselves for Zoom and memes that it’s blowing my mind.
