I've been unusually quiet, here - just wanted to let you all know what's going on. This is my last week at Grist, next week I start full time as a trainee electrician.
Where is the electricity from California batteries going? In this chart I see about 31 MW/h charging and about 21 MW/h discharging. Is the chart just misleading? caiso.com/TodaysOutlook/…

The fact that Texas has more than 3x the solar capacity coming online this year than California should make us reassess what we consider effective policy here. Yes, targets and subsidies are important, but so are interconnections and regulatory reform.
Blue states talk a big game on clean energy goals while Texas just goes and builds it.

NEW: analysis of millions of books published over the centuries suggests western society is shifting away from a culture of progress, and towards one of caution, worry and risk-aversion. I think this is one of the most important challenges facing us today.
The world is full of problems, which people are often very aware of. But most people have no idea about the many improvements we have visualized, and therefore they lose hope for the future and think the world is doomed. gapminder.org/i
Recent inflows of unauthorized migrants from Mexico increase the vote share for the Republican Party in federal elections, reduce local public spending, and shift it away from education towards law-and-order ernestotiburcio.files.wordpress.com/2023/11/the-lo…
Appliance repair is interesting from an economic standpoint. Repair techs need >$100/hr to be profitable, and most clients aren't sophisticated enough to provide actionable info. Thus, two trips are necessary (>$200) & this can quickly add up to >1/2 replacement cost.
I usually find that experience beats a PhD but after a week and a half of trying to get a repair guy I took my chances and triumphed! Can now wash my clothes.
