"Neutrality & impartiality are not abstract concepts, lofty principles that have no relation to people’s reality. It is a means to an end, a way of working that allows us to reach, help and in many cases save the lives of civilians, no matter what side." icrc.org/en/document/uk…

Good news for the 113 detainees and their families. For many decades now, through visits governed by clearly defined modalities and confidential bilateral dialogue with detaining authorities, we @ICRC provide a critical layer of protection in places of detention.

Today in #Sanaa, #Yemen, 113 conflict-related detainees were unilaterally released. The ICRC assisted the detainees to ensure their release was humane and dignified. Read more here: ms.spr.ly/6016YexPQ

The reuniting of 113 prisoners with their families in Yemen today is an illustration of why the @ICRC needs to be able to operate as a neutral humanitarian intermediary despite extreme levels of violence and polarization. For the #ICRC, #neutrality is what enables action.

📍Yemen Today 113 persons detained in relation to the conflict were released from prison to be reunited with loved ones. As we wrap up the unilateral release operation in Sana’a, we acknowledge that more families are waiting for news from their loved ones: They deserve answers…

This week, several Ukrainian children were reunited with close family members, thanks to the ongoing collaboration between the authorities of Qatar, Russia & Ukraine, and with the support of ICRC teams in Moscow and Minsk. Families belong together.

Incredible work by the Russian Red Cross. Their staff and volunteers are working at blood donation centers and running a psychological support hotline as the city & nation mourns those killed and injured in Friday's horrific attack.

The terrorist attack in the Moscow. It is a great sorrow and loss to see so many innocent victims of this terrible act. More than 130 people dead and more than 100 injured. Our staff and volunteers help around the clock in blood centers, on our psychological support hotline.

and while new humanitarian crisis emerge, "old" ones continue. The plight of tens of thousands of children stranded in Al Hol camp stands as one of the world largest child protection crisis, with no end in sight. What future do we want to give to Hawra?

#Syria, Al-Hol camp Little Hawra’s hopes exceed the harsh living conditions that caused her to get sick in Al-Hol camp. She dreams of becoming a doctor & helping others. Hawra is currently being treated at a @SYRedCrescent & @ICRC_sy hospital, and her condition is improving.

The @ICRC’s unique role in conflicts is often misunderstood. This BBC article includes a few examples of what can be achieved through the role of ‘neutral humanitarian intermediary’. Worth a read.

For those of us who knew him, he was Abu Waleed. I also called him Al Fāris فارس (the cavalier) as we used to go horseback riding together in #Gaza. A loving colleague, a friend, a committed humanitarian. Rest in Peace brother, you and your family members. We will miss you much.

This is a law made by states after several devastating wars aimed at preserving a minimum level of #humanity. If we go below this level, what are we? And what remains of our human conscience? #GenevaConventions icrc.org/en/war-and-law…

The Geneva Conventions ensure: 👉 Torture is illegal. 👉 The dead deserve dignity. 👉 Hospitals are not attacked. 👉 Sick and wounded are cared for. 👉 Detainees are treated humanely. 👉 Families know the fate of missing loved ones. The Geneva Conventions preserve our humanity.

Today I met families of hostages and Israel's foreign and health ministers. The families' pain is simply heart-wrenching. The hostages must immediately be released. @ICRC will not stop working to gain access to them: and we need agreements to be reached that allow us to work.
