"Neutrality & impartiality are not abstract concepts, lofty principles that have no relation to people’s reality. It is a means to an end, a way of working that allows us to reach, help and in many cases save the lives of civilians, no matter what side." icrc.org/en/document/uk…
Our deepest condolences go out to @PalestineRCS on the killing of their medics Haitham and Suhail. Medical personnel and ambulances are #NotATarget
“We experienced first-hand the horror of this war, witnessing the appalling injuries and death". Senior medical officer Dr. Sandy Inglis describes the impacts of the recent airstrikes in Rafah, and scenes from the Red Cross Field Hospital as staff received patients 👇🏽
Good news for the 113 detainees and their families. For many decades now, through visits governed by clearly defined modalities and confidential bilateral dialogue with detaining authorities, we @ICRC provide a critical layer of protection in places of detention.
Today in #Sanaa, #Yemen, 113 conflict-related detainees were unilaterally released. The ICRC assisted the detainees to ensure their release was humane and dignified. Read more here: ms.spr.ly/6016YexPQ
The reuniting of 113 prisoners with their families in Yemen today is an illustration of why the @ICRC needs to be able to operate as a neutral humanitarian intermediary despite extreme levels of violence and polarization. For the #ICRC, #neutrality is what enables action.
📍Yemen Today 113 persons detained in relation to the conflict were released from prison to be reunited with loved ones. As we wrap up the unilateral release operation in Sana’a, we acknowledge that more families are waiting for news from their loved ones: They deserve answers…
The @ICRC welcomes the adoption of UNSCR 2730, which serves as a clear reminder of the absolute necessity and obligation for all parties of armed conflicts to respect and protect humanitarian personnel, their premises, and assets. Read more: ms.spr.ly/6015YdM4d
This week, several Ukrainian children were reunited with close family members, thanks to the ongoing collaboration between the authorities of Qatar, Russia & Ukraine, and with the support of ICRC teams in Moscow and Minsk. Families belong together.
#ICRC Delegation for Cyberspace at the Luxembourg Aid & Development conference Assises de la Cooperation luxembourgeoise. It's really crucial to stress the importance of neutral, independent and impartial humanitarian action in cyberspace. #DigitHarium #D4C #digitaldilemmas
Incredible work by the Russian Red Cross. Their staff and volunteers are working at blood donation centers and running a psychological support hotline as the city & nation mourns those killed and injured in Friday's horrific attack.
The terrorist attack in the Moscow. It is a great sorrow and loss to see so many innocent victims of this terrible act. More than 130 people dead and more than 100 injured. Our staff and volunteers help around the clock in blood centers, on our psychological support hotline.
I am shocked by the tragedy unfolding in Moscow. My deepest condolences to all of the people affected by the shooting and their families. The help line of the Russian Red Cross has scaled up its capacities to provide psychological support to people in need: +7 (800) 250-18-59
and while new humanitarian crisis emerge, "old" ones continue. The plight of tens of thousands of children stranded in Al Hol camp stands as one of the world largest child protection crisis, with no end in sight. What future do we want to give to Hawra?
#Syria, Al-Hol camp Little Hawra’s hopes exceed the harsh living conditions that caused her to get sick in Al-Hol camp. She dreams of becoming a doctor & helping others. Hawra is currently being treated at a @SYRedCrescent & @ICRC_sy hospital, and her condition is improving.
The most horrific story reaches a tragic end. Cannot imagine the terror that this 6-year-old girl felt. Two @PalestineRCS medics killed while trying to rescue her. Beyond words.
❗️👨👩👧👦 These days our teams in Moscow and Minsk are participating in another transfer operation to reunite Ukrainian children with their relatives in Ukraine. We do it together with authorities of Russia, Ukraine and Qatar.
"It is just awful to see and it’s so relentless. It's just not stopping, they keep coming in every day." An @ICRC surgeon speaks to @Beltrew about the reality of working in a Gaza hospital. Extremely distressing. independent.co.uk/news/world/mid…
A very high number of civilians have been killed & maimed, including thousands of children. Homes, hospitals & other infrastructure critical to survival of civilian population have suffered colossal destruction. @ICRC warns of a disaster for civilians. icrc.org/en/document/is…
The @ICRC’s unique role in conflicts is often misunderstood. This BBC article includes a few examples of what can be achieved through the role of ‘neutral humanitarian intermediary’. Worth a read.
Some perspective on the role #ICRC has played in different contexts to reconnect or reunite hostage or prisoners with their families. www-bbc-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.bbc.co…
For those of us who knew him, he was Abu Waleed. I also called him Al Fāris فارس (the cavalier) as we used to go horseback riding together in #Gaza. A loving colleague, a friend, a committed humanitarian. Rest in Peace brother, you and your family members. We will miss you much.
We are devastated by the killing of our valued colleague Abdellatif Ali Moussa, along with several of his family, in northern #Gaza. Abdellatif worked as a driver for the ICRC for some 20 years. We extend our profound condolences to Abdellatif's family, friends & colleagues.
We @ICRC confirm the safe release of 24 hostages. We facilitated this release by transporting them from Gaza to the Rafah border, in our role as a neutral intermediary between the parties.
We are relieved to confirm the safe release of 24 hostages. We have facilitated this release by transporting them from Gaza to the Rafah border, marking the real-life impact of our role as a neutral intermediary between the parties.
Healthcare workers, ambulances, and hospitals must not be just respected but also protected. Watch @CDroegeICRC on @AJEnglish explaining why and how 👇
This is a law made by states after several devastating wars aimed at preserving a minimum level of #humanity. If we go below this level, what are we? And what remains of our human conscience? #GenevaConventions icrc.org/en/war-and-law…
The Geneva Conventions ensure: 👉 Torture is illegal. 👉 The dead deserve dignity. 👉 Hospitals are not attacked. 👉 Sick and wounded are cared for. 👉 Detainees are treated humanely. 👉 Families know the fate of missing loved ones. The Geneva Conventions preserve our humanity.
Today I met families of hostages and Israel's foreign and health ministers. The families' pain is simply heart-wrenching. The hostages must immediately be released. @ICRC will not stop working to gain access to them: and we need agreements to be reached that allow us to work.
