One day we're going to look back and wonder how a company had the audacity to copy all the world's information and enable people to violate the copyrights of those works. All Napster did was enable people to transfer files in a peer-to-peer manner. They didn't even host any of…
But *why* are universities facing financial risk? They hire the "best" consultants to do forecasts, they pay millions to their "leadership" teams, they keep expanding campus infrastructure, and give free flats and furniture to the Principals...oh did I just answer the question.
We're fixing the foundations of higher education to deliver change for students.
Tuition fees in England set to rise for first time in eight years, with statement to MPs expected later bbc.in/3YRg0Jt
For those who were asleep at the back: - the overwhelming majority of farmers will be unaffected by the proposed changes to Inheritance Tax - those complaining about it are the multi-millionaires who saw investing in farmland as an excellent tax avoidance measure.
And the data shows that most of the cost of the tax increase will be borne by a few very large estates. In 2022 2% of agricultural estates - just 37 - claimed an average of £6m. That's what this is really about - not 70,000 farms. So let's drop the hyperbolic fake stats.

I'll tell you what goes on here. 🧵
A failure to understand these norms has been the cause of many of the problems that we have faced over the last 50 years. In many respects - homeownership, law & order, migration -, we have failed to make the system work on its own terms. Time to embrace our system as it is! 🏴
In the last week, Labour hit a crucial milestone on getting rid of hereditary peers, unlocked £1bn funding for social housing insulation, initiated plans to regulate buy-now-pay-later lenders and started to coalesce around an HS2 replacement. Barely any chat about this at all.
Are you researching women who made fashion, at any time or place through history? Then this is a reminder to please consider submitting an article for my special issue of Women’s History Review. Deadline 18th November.
I lived at the Barbican from 1993-2006, briefly involved in the very strange politics of the Square Mile (eg our local council elections are outside party politics..). Very conservative policies and statements especially from the City Lord Mayor. This is extraordinarily frank!
So the @citylordmayor doesn’t agree with @wesstreeting’s Brexit capitulation. “Brexit was a disaster,” Mainelli told Reuters. “We had 525,000 workers in 2016. My estimate is that we lost just short of 40,000.” thetimes.com/article/f82b0c…
The market has failed to manage our water system, only democracy can turn it around. If you agree, add your name to @labourlewis “Water Bill” here: actionnetwork.org/forms/add-your…
