One of the 396 elms planted in the Upper Thames to support the White-letter Hairstreak. This one, in Berkshire, is a Sapporo ‘autumn gold’ looking both autumnal and gold in the sun this afternoon! soon be big enough to host a colony of WLH @UpperThamesBC

At the Branch Chairs meeting at Nottingham, BC awarded Nick Bowles with the Hidden Heroes award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to butterfly and moth conservation over the last 43 years. Well done Nick and very well deserved.

A Large White enjoying a bit of sun this afternoon at Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire. I always think this such an underrated butterfly. Also saw two Small Tortoiseshells there, couldn’t get a pic but great to see, my first for 2024. @UpperThamesBC

Found this Knot grass larva today that had come to a rather unfortunate end. Is it possible to id the parasite from this? @kitenet @UpperThamesBC

Ivy is a much maligned plant. My garden Ivy was teeming today with bees, wasps, flies and of course a few butterflies! Come winter it will be the Thrushes and Redwings that grace its boughs. @UpperThamesBC

visited Rye Castle this morning. I’m fairly certain this fig leaf damage in the castles herb garden is Choreutis nemorana. Are there many records of this in Sussex? @BCSussex @SussexEmerald

I took this picture in my garden (Berks/Oxon border) back in 2015. As far as I can recall, I haven't seen Small Tortoiseshell in the garden since and have seen very few while out and about in the UTB area. Are other other people having more luck ? @UpperThamesBC

Mothing at Hinksey Heights last night. A bit cold and a bright moon didn't help with moth numbers but we did come across a False Ladybird, a new one for me. Apparently a fungus feeder. @judyweb32049878
