All Saint's Church Brixworth, Northamptonshire is perhaps the most important survival of Anglo-Saxon architecture north of the Alps. Much of the C7th church remains from the reign of King Wulfhere in the form of a Roman Basilica. The stair turret is C10th. Spire is C14th.

Wow, this unique and exceptionally well-preserved Roman ‘scutum’ is the only known surviving example of the semi-cylindrical shield used by Roman legionaries! Fabulously painted with Roman symbols of victory. Leather and wood with bronze edge binding. Central metal boss…

The miraculous Great East Window of Gloucester Cathedral, installed in 1350 and surviving with almost all of its original stained glass intact after more than 650 years. The window is the size of a modern tennis court, and at the time of its creation was the largest in the world.

The remarkably intact trench basin or 'lavatorium' of Gloucester Cathedral Cloisters dating to the mid 1300s, with its own elaborate fan-vaulted ceiling. The lavatorium served as a washroom for the monks, used especially for communal handwashing before meals.

The police investigation of Allison Pearson is utterly Kafkaesque. Officers have launched a criminal probe over a year-old, since-deleted tweet. This is chilling: buff.ly/4flNN3d

One of the tragedies of my lifetime is the recent precipitous lowering of standards at the world's great universities. This farewell to Cambridge, where I spent three happy years as a research fellow and college lecturer, filled me with sadness, then rage: spectator.co.uk/article/declin…
