Multiparty Maryland

@MultipartyMD

Nonpartisan advocate for multiparty democracy based on proportional representation of parties in legislatures. X% vote = X% seats. No "3rd party" gimmickry.

Imagine if Maryland applied STV to it's existing multimember legislative districts. Just change the way delegates are elected and nothing else. Or go further, consolidate all the single and double districts back to 3 member or more. #ProportionalRepresentation in MD

Ireland 🇮🇪 has used #STV #ProportionalRepresentation for over 100 years. How did Ireland get proportional representation? – Electoral Reform Society – ERS 🇨🇦🗳🇮🇪🗳🇨🇦 #cdnpoli electoral-reform.org.uk/how-did-irelan…

Anyone promoting 3rd party viability WITHOUT centering the electoral reforms necessary to create a multiparty system is immediately suspect. People aren't stupid, they've seen what 3rd parties can and can't achieve in a 2PS. The results speak for themselves.

The Democratic Party moving forward must rid itself of the idea that third parties “cost” Democrats elections. We live in a democracy, people get on the ballot and they run. Voters vote. The idea that Green Party voters would automatically vote democratic is simply false.

There seems to be an online cottage industry selling false 3rd party hope to dejected leftishists. Without putting electoral reform to create a multiparty system front and center, they should be immediately suspect.

POLL: For those who still participate in electoral politics, which would you prefer to focus on: Hostile takeover of Democratic Party. The Green Party. Other existing left-leaning parties. A brand new anti-duopoly party from the ground up.

We cannot wait on politicians whose careers have been forged in the 2 party system to see beyond its blinkered horizon. We need to lift the veil and attack this system at its root. We need electoral reforms that produce multiparty democracy. % votes = % seats.

Pennsylvania is going to count every last vote. That’s not controversial—that’s the law. Also, Green dipshits’ votes helping elect the GOP.

“If a small but decisive sliver of relatively disengaged voters are deciding electoral outcomes on what appear to be random considerations can either party ever achieve a meaningful mandate and can elections truly deliver accountability?”

Similar to past election cycles, undecided voters played a major role in the #midterms2022. In a @PolReformNA report, @oscarpocasangre & @leedrutman examine the demographics & policy preferences of undecided voters & their influence on US democracy. 🗳️ bit.ly/3EfFqou

For years, reformers like me thought Independent Redistricting Commissions were necessary reform. Passed in some states. But in this hyper-partisan climate, IRCs cost Democrats control of US House because some Blue states unilaterally disarmed while...1/3 democracysos.substack.com/p/democrats-lo…

In our new op-ed, @leedrutman and I argue that swing voters have far too much power in our elections—and we can fix this with a straightforward (and constitutional!) policy change. nytimes.com/2022/11/01/opi… A thread:

Your reminder that there's no special magic in capping the house at 435. It chokes representation. @UncapTheHouse is one component of making the US a multiparty system based on #ProportionalRepresentation

Finally got done with a project of mine. A map of the US House under the ratification of the Congressional Apportionment Amendment. 1738 members of the House representing 190k people per representative.
