Satellite altimetry as a way to directly measure the height of Earth’s surface from space started in the 1970s, and has evolved through distinct eras. At Cryo2ice I highlighted what these data have taught us about Antarctic mass loss and the driving processes. #ErasTour #Cryo2ice

The Earth just experienced its 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗮𝘆 on record. 🌍🌡️ New @CopernicusECMWF data shows that last Sunday, the daily global average temperature reached a record high 17.09°C 📈 It marginally beats the previous record from 6 July 2023. 🔗shorturl.at/fpkF8

The first global temperature data is in for the full month of September. This month was, in my professional opinion as a climate scientist – absolutely gobsmackingly bananas. JRA-55 beat the prior monthly record by over 0.5C, and was around 1.8C warmer than preindutrial levels.

Our study at Steenstrup Glacier, Greenland, highlights one of the most dramatic instances of glacier change on the ice sheet to date. This glacier was stable for decades before rapidly retreating and ~doubling in ice flux over the span of only 3 yrs.

Between 2018 and 2021, KIV Steenstrup Nordre Bræ in Greenland retreated 7 km and quadrupled in velocity. It's now in the top 10% of glaciers contributing to Greenland's discharge. Our new paper in Nature Comms: nature.com/articles/s4146… @ByrdPolar @Michalea_King @PolarScience_UW

Using escape room-inspired materials, youth were encouraged to use deductive reasoning to sort through evidence based on Arctic ecology and geography. These skills would help them solve an Arctic Mystery and engage with Polar and STEM themes. (2/2) bit.ly/3j8nUM3

If you are a grad student affiliated with a US university, interested in doing research in glaciology, sea level, or solid Earth processes, belong to a marginalized/underrepresented group (FN is fine!), and would like to do an internship at @NASAJPL, let me know. RT, please.
