By request of my students, I put together a short explainer of some common data wrangling tasks in R. If you're interested, you can find it here: joshmerfeld.github.io/applied-microe…

If you consider your enemy “stupid”, but continue to lose to them, what does that make you? Don’t underestimate your enemy and do not look down upon their followers.

UPDATE: Dr. Willoughby-Herard and 9 students and faculty arrested at the UCI encampment are back to court tmrw. The petition to drop the charges has over 8K signatures. Let's keep the pressure up! See link below with petition in several languages. Thanks! linktr.ee/UCISolidarity

A woman who said she is a professor in the global studies dept was detained alongside UC Irvine students When asked if she was concerned about possibly jeopardizing her job, she responded, "What job do I have if the students don't have a future?"

So popular you never mentioned the issue you lobby for in ads. So popular you took GOP money and courted Republicans to meddle in Dem primaries. So popular your candidate needed to spend 15x more than what I spent to defeat a 52-year family dynasty.

Fact check on what Democratic voters find popular vs unpopular, @AOC

I voted yes on this bill. We have this option in Michigan. The whole country should do it.

We should be able to track a ballot just like we can track a package. California already does this, but my Vote By Mail Tracking Act—which just passed the House—would add a barcode to each ballot nationwide, so every American can have confidence their vote is counted.

The Harris campaign had a theory of the election: that by courting moderate Republican voters disenchanted by Trump they could make up for the erosion of working class POC (angered by immigration & inflation) and Arabs & antiwar voters (angered by Biden's unwavering support of…

Sorry no, we are not doing this. Uncommitted was explicitly a movement to get people not to vote for Democrats - it’s in the name! You can’t spend 6 months telling people not to vote for Dems and then try to claim that’s not what you did.

This is ridiculous!

Ah yes, it’s always the unionized grad student who are responsible for the demise of English, history, etc

There is research published on this topic, but it is purposely ignored by people who simply do not want their class interests threatened

Democrats love to act like Republicans, lose, then conclude that the problem is that they’re still not enough like Republicans.

I was just thinking about this recently. But then again, it’s hard to keep track of this sort of hypocrisy

Republicans suddenly think the economy's great and the election wasn't rigged ow.ly/syV8105P7Lw

This poll is basically misinformation >300 native people were polled. Here’s the full breakdown nativenewsonline.net/opinion/pollin…

65% of Native Americans voted for Trump.

Let this serve as your post-lecture reminder that Beltway surveys are pretty USELESS for understanding Black public opinion. With only 130 Black respondents the Black sample is unreliable w/a MoE of +/-9%!! So while the Q is interesting, we can’t draw any confident conclusions.

More black folks blame Harris for the L than white folks.... interesting.

Hm, interesting…

I love this Zohran video because these are completely normal, every-day people expressing concerns about Gaza, Ukraine, economic precarity, and the hollowness of the Democratic Party that I was told were the exclusive concerns of the far left. Wrong.

This will end up being THE story of the 2024 election. The Democratic Party’s inability to (at a minimum) retain 2020 turnout numbers for Black voters while at the same time pandering to the Never Trump defectors from the GOP…

If Black turnout instead went up by 1.9 percentage points (like white turnout did) that would mean 103,000 additional Black voters in 2024. Trump won the state by 115,095 votes.

Apparently, if 121,342 voters across MI, PA, & WI changed their votes Harris would be president. Or, hear me out, with Black people voting for Harris 85% of the time (per ABC), Democrats just needed to mobilize 143K more Black voters. Now you tell me which sounds more feasible.

Both things can be true. Obama was and still is a generational political talent, the likes of which we won’t see again. The implications of that aren’t necessarily good or beneficial for Americans, but what’s true is true.
