Stanisław Lem was born #OTD in 1921 to a family of Polish Jews. He survived both Soviet and German occupations, and escaped death in German-perpetrated Holocaust on many occasions. After WW2, he became one of the most popular sci-fi writers thanks to works such as "Solaris."

Today is the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Totalitarian Regimes. In the European public space, there is still too little space devoted to the memory of the victims. Communism and Nazism claimed millions of them. #NeverAgain #NeverForget

#OTD in 1939, German Minister of Foreign Affairs Joachim von Ribbentrop and his Soviet counterpart Vyacheslav Molotov signed a non-aggression pact with a secret protocol that divided Europe. For Poland, it resulted in a brutal invasion from both sides, which launched WW2.

🇪🇺 Dziś Europejski Dzień Pamięci Ofiar Reżimów Totalitarnych, upamiętniający ofiary masowych deportacji i eksterminacji. Obchodzimy go w rocznicę zawarcia paktu Ribbentrop-Mołotow z 23.08.1939, który był symbolem porozumienia między dwoma totalitaryzmami - nazizmem i komunizmem.

I welcomed Vladimir Kara-Murza and his family to the White House today to celebrate his return to America. Vladimir spent two and a half years unjustly imprisoned in Russia for speaking out against Russia’s war in Ukraine. Today his family is whole once more.
