This looks like removing race from our algorithms. This looks like a full reexamination of standardized tests. This looks like health equity as part of every department’s goals. This looks like actual community engagement that moves beyond health fair.

The closer we get to election day, the more upset I get that millions of incarcerated ppl can't participate. It's absurd that so many *formerly* incarcerated ppl can't vote, but there's also nothing about being *currently* incarcerated that means your vote should be taken away.

THIS is why history, sociology and critical race theory must ALL become pillars of medical education. Students need more than optional lunch talks, electives and student led initiatives. Institutions must make this a priority. If not, Black patients will continue to suffer.

My cousins friend contracted COVID-19. A black woman. She’s 24 years old. Has been struggling to recover. When they called for an ambulance, they told her family that if she turns blue in the face they should call back. Black people do not turn blue in the face.

The old African-American aphorism “When white America catches a cold, black America gets pneumonia” has a new, morbid twist, @KeeangaYamahtta writes. When white America catches the coronavirus, black Americans die. nyer.cm/7EAcbRZ

📣 We need to say this to medical students on day 1: 1. Race is a social construct 2. There is more genetic diversity within “races” than between “races” 3. Racism, not race, is the primary reason for the race-based disparities you see. Period.

"Any effective plan to fight Covid-19 must be shaped by an understanding of its spread and impact among communities of color and others marginalized in society," writes @DrAlethaMaybank nyti.ms/34iYeRv

We are releasing people from jail who are there for misdemeanors, we are preventing families from being evicted, we are sending people checks for food, we are giving the homeless places to live. We don’t have to wait for a pandemic to do these things, we should always do them.

Our immigrant neighbors MUST have access to testing and treatment. We are in this together.

@RodneyIngram my nephew was supposed to see Aladdin for his birthday next week for his birthday- his first time seeing Broadway. Would you be able to do anything for him? He's so bummed...

Yes, thank you to our teachers!

Shout out to all the teachers who've had just a few days to transform their entire syllabus into something that works online. And shout out to all the teachers who've been accommodating & advocating for students who don't have access to the internet at home. We appreciate yall.

I know this is not at all a new point, but I can't tell y'all how much I love and appreciate public libraries. I love them as a parent. I love them as a researcher. I love them as a writer. I love them as a reader. Shout out to universal public goods & services.

You'll see the same trends for Native American and Latinx groups. And when the intersectionality of this issue is considered the results are startling. Systemic racism is the biggest risk factor that exists for many diseases in this country. I need every doctor to know that.
