Turquoise is a copper mineral and the official State Gemstone of AZ! This leaf was carved from turquoise from the Sleeping Beauty Mine in Miami, Gila Co., AZ. It is on display in our exhibit at the Sun City Rockhounds Mineral Museum along with other minerals from our collection.
Sneak peak of our newest collab with the City of Phoenix! “From Mine to Medallion” will be at the South Mountain Visitor Center when it reopens soon. We’ve loaned several incredible AZ copper mineral specimens for this exhibit that connects mining and public art. @PhoenixParks
We’ve got a new blog post on our website sharing photos from the recent Denver Gem & Mineral Show. Enjoy! ammnre.arizona.edu/news/mineral-o… Pictured: Director Marta with our “Mineral Oddities” special exhibit at the show.
This gold ore is from the Max Delta Mine in the South Mountains here in Phoenix! It is quartz with pyrite (gold), chalcopyrite (blue), and limonite (brown). We are loaning this piece to the South Mountain Environmental Ed. Center for their brand new exhibitions opening this fall.
Good morning! It’s a beautiful day here in downtown Phoenix, although it will be hot, with a high of 111 degrees! We’re ready for colder weather.
Society of Mineral Museum Professionals gathering at the Hardrock Summit! So fun to catch up with our colleagues here in Denver. @TheSMMP
We’re at the Denver Gem & Mineral Show! For the first time in several years, our museum has returned as an exhibitor at the show and we have had a great time. This year’s theme was ‘Mineral Oddities’ and we showcased several strange and fun specimens from our collection. #DGMS
We recently hosted members of our Governor-Appointed Advisory Council along with @UArizona administration and representatives from downtown Phx museums to get direct feedback about the mission and vision of the new AMMNRE Museum. We’re thankful for their support - and yours too!
Hello from our museum staff and planning consultants!
I captured some photos of our building amid a decently cloudy sky today. They are taken facing northeast, from the other side of Washington Street. We are lucky to have such a historic and well-located building on the Arizona Capitol Mall.
Here’s a lesser-seen angle of our 1921 El Zaribah Shrine building. This is the northeast corner of the building that is visible from 15th Avenue. Today our building is mostly surrounded by AZ State government buildings making up the Capitol Mall.
We’re ‘inspired’ by this beautiful specimen of chrysocolla & quartz from the historic Inspiration Mine in Miami, AZ. It has been carefully cut to reveal the mineral’s structure. Check out the pockets of darker green malachite too! This is on display at the AZ House of Reps.
A few photos of the petrified wood logs in front of our building on Washington. These neat pieces are from Holbrook, Navajo Co., AZ. #DYK Petrified wood is the official State Fossil of Arizona? ‘Rainbow’ wood is an iconic symbol of our state with a fascinating geologic history.
A shot of our 1921 building at 15th and Washington on this hazy day today. According to ADEQ there is a large dust storm making its way through the state today. You can barely make out the mountains surrounding Phoenix!
Welcome to Monsoon Awareness Week 2024! Follow along this week as multiple NWS offices across the Southwest bring you safety tips and tricks for the monsoon. Remember…In Monsoon Weather, Safety’s Clever!
Last weekend our museum partnered with the @UA_ANGMM to display a case of minerals at the Mineralogical Society of AZ’s PHX Heritage Show. It featured specimens from recent donations by collector Bob Weaver, including show theme fluorite and “Curator’s Picks” from AZ and beyond.
Throwback Thursday: Monday Crew volunteers at a workday in 2019. Standing in the back is millman and leader Charlie Connell, who passed away in 2022. We are so grateful for the dedicated men and women who have helped us throughout the past few years. Thank you! #TBT
Tumamoc Hill and Sentinel Peak (A-Mountain) tower over Tucson, AZ. They comprise a pile of #volcanic rocks ranging in age from 23 – 24 Ma (million-years-before-present) basaltic andesites, exposed at the summit of the two hills; to volcanic tuffs of the Late Cretaceous
The Mineralogical Society of Arizona's 4th Phoenix Heritage Mineral Show is on June 1-2, 2024! All information can be found here: msaaz.org/PHX-HERITAGE-S… Make sure to look out for our joint mineral display (fluorite and Curator's picks!) with @UA_ANGMM #minerals
We welcomed staff from @NaturalSciences to our building yesterday. They are embarking on a major exhibit expansion. It’s helpful to learn from our fellow museums, especially those dealing with construction, renovations and exhibit design. Thanks for visiting us, new friends!
