As we mark National Postdoc Appreciation Week we're celebrating the work of @KaivalyaRawal, who is working on a new technology that can generate explanations for various types of AI models without making causal assumptions or requiring access to proprietary details.

Yesterday, I tweeted that model collapse appears when researchers intentionally induce it in ways that don't match what is done in practice Let me explain using the Shumailov et al. @Nature 2024 paper's methodology as an example Paper: nature.com/articles/s4158… 🧵⬇️ 1/N

For anyone interested in model collapse, I strongly urge people to look at our COLM 2024 paper arxiv.org/abs/2404.01413 Model collapse appears when researchers intentionally induce it in ways that simply don't match what is actually done practice @alexandr_wang is wrong

Went to see Aquaman in the theatre. Best part was the Dune trailer that played at the start.

We have heard many extrapolations of Mistral AI’s position on the AI Act, so I’ll clarify. In its early form, the AI Act was a text about product safety. Product safety laws are beneficial to consumers. Poorly designed use of automated decision-making systems can cause…

What Wikipedia did: we stood strong for our principles and fought to the Supreme Court of Turkey and won. This is what it means to treat freedom of expression as a principle rather than a slogan.

Did your brain fall out of your head, Yglesias? The choice is have Twitter throttled in its entirety or limit access to some tweets. Which one do you want?

this is the nature and the paradox of american capitalism, though--to shave off the highest quality luxuries and instead deliver a degraded product at mass scale--and in so doing, to enable a prosperity that in the end returns that luxury to many more the magic beast at work

AR-LLMs can pass the bar exam, medical licensing & MBA exams. But on the IIT entrance exams they perform badly on chemistry, horribly on physics, and terribly on math. They are good with rote learning & fluency but bad with building mental models & reasoning with them.

Sparks of AGI? @Cinnabar233 and I decided to put this to test and evaluate GPT models on one of the toughest exams in the world: the JEE Advanced. It is held anually for admissions to the IITs and other top Engg colleges in India. 1/n

One way to make sense of all this AI fear mongering is to think of AI as de-generative instead of generative. #GenerativeAI #Degenerates #StateOfML

Call a banana conscious, and techreview will write an article about it. But call an LLM sentient and everyone loses their minds. #LaMDA #StateOfAI

Can consciousness throughout the universe—not only in people and animals, but also in trees, plants, and bacteria—be empirically tested? Surprisingly, perhaps it can. trib.al/3CkYIVU

Good question, the answer to which is elaborated in #bookofwhy (p. 200) and wikipedia, but can be seen clearly from the fact that human intuition, across all cultures and persuasions, rejects the possibility of a drug that is bad for women, bad for men, but good for people. 1/2

How does Simpson's paradox show that the mind is causal (not probabilistic)?

Simpson's paradox gets everyone...

Meanwhile, "explainable-ai" is so firmly entrenched in the make-believe space that there exist no applied-ai alternatives. Wondering how much longer the VC money will last. #MLOps #ExplainableAI #StateOfML

Over the past 10 years, AI has specialized into two domains. "Applied AI" where the goal is to ship products with real-world impact. "Make-believe AI" where the goal is to ship press releases to convince investors and the public that what you're doing is important.

Why do all the data scientists I know insist on putting ham in the macaroni? #ExplainableAI #StateOfML #MLOps youtu.be/A-RfHC91Ewc

But how will engineering be able to prioritize tasks without product?

“No one was asking for e-email. My boss wasn’t asking for it. No one was. It just seemed like an interesting thing to build with a computer and a network.”
