After narrowly losing leader race, Sen. Cornyn says he’s still running for reelection in 2026 and is confident he’ll defeat any primary challenges I asked what he sees as his role the next 2 years. He wants to be “always in the middle of some of the hardest issues that…

New Senate Majority Leader John Thune has been on the job for three hours and…..oh boy, did his job just get tougher

“Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden’s biggest — and fleeting — brush with national fame came in 2017 when he triggered a panic alarm during a hearing to test how quickly police would arrive to support his argument that people should be allowed to carry guns in the Capitol” #SDGov

President-elect Trump's decision to name SD Gov. Kristi Noem as the next homeland security secretary means her state would get a new governor. #ksleg Noem's Cabinet appointment will make a plain-spoken rancher South Dakota's new governor apnews.com/article/south-…

Worth noting Thune won reelection in 2022, so he’s not up again until the end of Trump’s term in 2028.

Thune wins 29-24, I’m told. Will be the next Senate GOP leader

I’m told it was Thune 23 votes, Cornyn 15, Scott 13 There was a motion to delay the second vote two hours. It failed

A lot of Democrats want Ben Wikler to run the DNC next. It helps his case that Trump's win margin was narrower in Wisconsin than in any other battleground state. My story about why Dems love Wikler so much: theatlantic.com/politics/archi…

A note on the future of NATO: By law, presidents can’t unilaterally withdraw from the NATO Treaty. And who co-sponsored that law? Marco Rubio, (reportedly) Trump’s secretary of state. His nomination will be taken as an encouraging sign by Brussels + other European allies

Please, I beg of you, look at the raw vote numbers in the presidential and Senate races before drawing a big conclusion about split ticket voting. In several of the states Trump won, enough of his supporters ignored the GOP candidate to provide the Dem a winning margin

How did the polls do this cycle? Fine! They came within 3.5 points of the margin in every key state — no misses of 5 points or more like in 2016 and 2020. But the errors were still in the exact same direction as those cycles: underestimating Trump. wakeuptopolitics.com/p/how-close-wa…

SENATE FUN FACT: With Sen.-elect @RubenGallego winning in Arizona—and becoming the state’s first Latino senator—all four border states (AZ, CA, NM, TX) will be represented by a Latino senator for the first time. Gallego will join @AlexPadilla4CA, @benraylujan and @tedcruz

The quadrennial Cabinet shuffle begins with implications for '26. Noem to DHS, Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden becomes the #SDGov incumbent for midterms. If Dunleavy gets Interior, Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom becomes #AKGov. Not a bad consolation prize after she lost #AKAL primary
