Trump announces he's appointing Jay Clayton as the next Manhattan U.S. attorney. If confirmed by the Senate, that means Clayton, a corporate lawyer who served as SEC chair under Trump's first term, will take over the corruption prosecution of Mayor Adams.

Brezenoff: "Of the four borough jails, Brooklyn is the one that seems to have the best chance" of opening in the near-ish term. "I believe that Brooklyn should be seen as an opportunity to create the kind of jail...that demonstrates what a jail has to be in New York City."

Stan Brezenoff says he feels "absolute disgust" about the way "we have completely failed over many many years" to fulfill our responsibility at Rikers, especially with respect to the long length of stay of people accused of crimes.

.@NnekaTapia: the stress is literally "killing people." She says correction officers live shorter lives, as do people who spend time in jail and prison.

.@NnekaTapia it's not just incarcerated people who are exposed to lots of trauma — correction officers are, too, and that has serious consequences, including post-traumatic stress disorder.

.@Jan_Ransom asks: In lieu of a federal receiver, how can city and state work together now to improve conditions? @michaelislg says to start, "you need a commitment at the highest levels of government."

"That to me is the power of a receiver." Not even the best commissioner can pull off the reforms necessary given short timelines and all the obstacles in place.
