Just when you think you’ve seen it all… my six year old came home with these today 🖍️🗳️ #GE24 #Election24 #GeneralElection2024
NEW: The great Trump-Musk crackdown is coming. And it will hit hard & fast. Journalists will be first. But everyone else is next. I urge you to read my 20 lessons in How to Survive the Broligarchy, inspired by & featuring the great @TimothyDSnyder 1/ theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Chancellor Scholz told me that he planned to call Putin. His call, in my opinion, opens Pandora's Box. There may now be other conversations and phone calls. Just a lot of words. And this is exactly what Putin has long sought. It is critical for him to weaken his isolation, as…
Ah, that’s very sad to hear. Jon was a lovely, lovely man, and a comedy powerhouse. D’Unbeliveables opened the door to all the rest of us, doing epic tours and dragging the audience, sometimes bodily, into a mad world of their creation. A unique man, and will be missed. RIP.
Given the long history of Germany making deals with Russia over the heads of East Europeans, it's shocking that @Bundeskanzler did this clearly against the wishes of @ZelenskyyUa And at least partly for party-political election campaign reasons. ft.com/content/f0ee82… via @ft
Warmest congratulations to Catherine McGuinness on the occasion of her 90th birthday! There are few Irish public figures who have worked so diligently and effectively to advance the public good over so many years and across so many domains.
Once again, Ireland has to rely on its neighbours and allies to monitor a Russian spy ship confirmed to be operating near cables off Dublin. When are we going to get serious about defence and security? rte.ie/news/primetime… via @rte
“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction and the distinction between true and false no longer exist.” ― Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism
I'm no fan of @MichealMartinTD but this needed to be said. Working class children who gained from free second level education brought in by Limerickman Donogh O'Malley will not be lectured by privately educated left-wingers like @RBoydBarrett @paulmurphy_TD or @MaryLouMcDonald
I'm the son of a busman and I came from a working class community. I’m the first to get to second level education in our family. And the first generation to get to third level. I don’t need lectures from the far left.
This is a complete red herring. The constitutional position is clear: the President cannot refuse to dissolve the Dáil if the Taoiseach commands the support of a majority (which the current Taoiseach clearly does). President Higgins has no discretion here irishexaminer.com/news/politics/…
Stunning prescience by Rorty and well highlighted but sadly so horribly predictable in a hugely unequal society where women are valued less than rapists and where a plurality prefer a lying thief and demagogue to a ‘boring’ public representative of any colour or sex.
I’ve been thinking a lot about Richard Rorty’s 1998 prediction about the rise of an American strongman. The return of “jocular contempt for women” is particularly striking.
The Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl has said that he hopes the next Dáil will have "more females, more women, more young people, more people from a diverse background". @rtenews
I'm a deis taught student, who was an early school leaver. I dreamt of becoming a teacher but was told that dream was over. Yesterday, I had my 1st inspection as a teacher. To hear the words "I can tell you're going to be a great teacher" filled me with pride. #dcu #PME
War Diary Day 986 Donald Trump is elected President of USA. America has voted for its white king. Ukraine is in trouble. And so are we. Steady under fire. #VPDFO!
So true! Complacency is smugness on speed! 😱
Lest we get too smug: Ireland could have had its Trump moment. In 2018 a far-right racist, antisemite and xenophobe put her name forward as a candidate for President. Only 1 local authority (4 needed) supported her and her case could not proceed. Her name: Gemma O'Doherty.
Em- did you ever make a mistake or mis-read the data Paddy? I’m sure you have. Cool the aggression - we aren’t in TrumpLand yet! 🙏
I think a thoroughly decadent mid-week Negroni is entirely justified given the state of the planet...
Hillary Clinton was cold and elitist. Kamala Harris was down-to-earth and laughed too much. Is there always something wrong with women? There must be if a convicted, lying felon can beat them. In Finland we elected a woman president 24 years ago. #USAElection2024
