The belief in transferable skills is perhaps the most common chimera among teachers of reading. Imagine a handful of universal tools we could teach students and in so doing allow them to understand every text they read. Who wouldn’t seek out “the key to all inferences,” for…

Great listening to Eleanor Tomlinson at Fishlake this evening - what an inspiration and a beautiful story of her success!

One of the key reasons why we are increasingly moving to booklet driven lessons across our secondaries, where reading of challenging text is central.

Schools are ideally placed to ensure that students encounter thousands of words in a school a day in challenging, curriculum-relevant texts. Read more in our blog “Fluency and Comprehension” wp.me/p4hKgx-101 (4 min read). #EduTwitter

Exactly this. Just telling children to ‘write’ is not helpful if they don’t posses the knowledge of composition or convention required for the task. For example, many children arrive at secondary school as pretty decent creative writers, but have never written literacy or…

🧵 Writing Stamina 🧵 Our KS3 curriculum spiral curriculum model means we have taught writing structures from word --> sentence --> paragraph level. We focused on mastery, rather than throwing students into extended essay writing too soon. Some of the concerns others had was /1

It's been a privilege to be an Oracy Commissioner, and our report is out! All children need to learn *through* talk, *to* talk, and *about* talk. This needs many, varied & connected aspects of education – from sure foundations in early years to sustained work in adolescence.

We need to talk about oracy—what it is, why it matters, and why it matters now, in particular. We are proud to share the final report from The Oracy Education Commission, including our findings and recommendations. We need to talk👇 bit.ly/OEC-report

"Explicit instruction and systematic phonics are the most effective ways to teach children to read, and schools need to do what's best for children, regardless of postcode, languages spoken at home, or neurodiversity." Excellent news for Victoria! 👏

When I became Education Minister 12 months ago, little did I know I’d be stepping into a half-century-long policy debate about how we teach our kids the basics of reading. The reading wars are not quite over, but they should be. My op-ed in today’s @australian #SpringSt
