If you have a #Mac with a #M1 chip, I created rosetta-cli to make it easier to start shells and run commands in #Intel and #ARM modes using #Apple's #Rosetta 2 🪨⚡️ It's free and #opensource, and I'd really appreciate some testers and feedback. Thanks! 🙏 github.com/FdezRomero/ros…

A challenge plenty of Staff+ engineers have: no "roots" on any team. Staff and above levels are ones where engineers are often not hired to support any one team. My advice? Sort this, and make your "main" team and priority clear.

Be number 2️⃣

A big difference between two type of software 'architects': #1: Speaks the tech jargon. But *only* uses the jargon. #2: Speaks the tech jargon. But *only* uses jargon when it's helpful - and they know the other party understands - else uses plain language to explain ideas.

An absolutely underrated side-effect of any company that uses design docs / RFCs / ERDs / ADRs and circulates these: It's a *lot* easier for engineering managers, tech leads, staff+ engs to keep up with what is happening. Without such a culture: these people are often left out.

Happy New Year! 🎊🥳🥂🍇

12 years ago, Twitter’s office used a Mac Mini to tunnel into the servers. One day, an IT guy found it in the closet. “Anyone know who owns this?” “Unplug it. Someone will show up.” Everyone lost access to servers. Huge crisis. It became known as the “Load Bearing Mac Mini.”

Day by day, it's tempting to sacrifice well-being for success. Pushing past exhaustion brings short-term rewards. Over time, well-being is vital to success. Daily exhaustion adds up to long-term burnout. Success can be attained without rest, but it isn't sustained without rest.

YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN IC TRACK THAT GIVES FULL CAREER ADVANCEMENT BECAUSE OTHERWISE YOU GET PEOPLE ON THE ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT LADDER WHO DON’T CARE ABOUT THAT WORK BUT FELT STUCK OTHERWISE, WHICH IS BAD FOR EVERYONE
