My statement from yesterday's press conference at #SB58: @GretaThunberg and I talked about the urgent need for a fossil fuel phaseout whilst immediately and massively scaling up renewables in a just and equitable manner in line with the 1.5 Goal.

COP29 kicked off with sidelining the authority of the COP to the Paris Agreement by asking Parties to consider & adopt first decision on Art. 6.4 sustainable development mechanism (SDM) during Opening Plenary. WE WILL NOT ACCEPT THIS UNCONSCIONABLE ACT TO BYPASS PROCESSES! 🧵

COP29 is kicking off and the biggest issue on the agenda is climate finance. Nearly 200 states must agree on a new goal to help developing nations tackle climate change. They disagree on nearly every issue I've outlined key disputes & dividing lines ⬇️ carbonbrief.org/cop29-what-is-…

As #COP29 approaches, how do we advance on the Dubai deal to transition away from fossil fuels? One part of the answer: Countries should agree at COP29 to no new oil and gas licensing. Read the full blog post here: iisd.org/articles/expla…

Not only this, but a lot of people—not only or even especially on the left—have become convinced that responding to disagreement with shaming, cruelty, and condescension—even to allies—is a mark of principle and virtue. It usually isn’t, actually!

begging more leftists to learn basic conflict resolution and social skills. if you really want to mobilize large groups of people, you need to learn how to work with people. political theory is important but so is how you treat people.

“You’re just creating a voluntary fund that promotes biopiracy”. While many celebrate #COP16's outcome, Nithin Ramakrishnan is more critical. The Multilateral Mechanism on DSI should have created binding & fair obligations on benefit-sharing. vox.com/down-to-earth/…

The Role of Neurodivergent Individuals in Ancient Africa 🧵 For the past three years, I’ve been speaking with Fula, Mandinka, and Yoruba griots within my family and researching the role of autism, ADHD, and neurodivergence in West Africa; beyond Western labels. #Neurodiversity

Please be mindful when engaging with your neurodivergent Black female friends, and remember Obatala’s special protection of the neurodivergent. Those under Obatala’s care aren’t left vulnerable forever; disregard and disrespect of these ties don’t go unnoticed.

I interviewed workers in the military industry to understand the potential of a transition from arms production to green manufacturing. My report for @Cmmonwealth argues that industrial strategy in the 2020s should build on the Lucas Plan. common-wealth.org/publications/a…

🚨NEW REPORT The military industry — which produces huge social & ecological damage — contains technological capacity that can be repurposed for green manufacturing. We spoke to military industry workers that were open to a transition, building on the historic Lucas Plan.…

Let’s get something straight about fossil fuel phase-out: renewables needn’t replace all the coal, oil and gas we use today bc most of it is just used to produce and move those fossil fuels around! We only need to replace the useful energy: 37% of what we currently produce 🫨🧵

Good thread with some more details on the ‘debt for nature’ swap in Gabon. *Shockingly*, it looks likely this deal will provide neither debt relief nor ‘nature’.

The Gabon debt swap has been getting a ton of good press. However, now that we have more (but not all!) information about it, this deal is as questionable as those that preceded it 🧵
