I'm especially proud to see this article in print. There are people working hard to slow down and counteract resegregation in our community. epaa.asu.edu/index.php/epaa…

Do I actually need to be active on LinkedIn? This is a serious question.

No antiracism without dismantling white supremacy. This means questioning systems and institutions built on the norms of whiteness. Happy new year!

2022 is the year I defended my dissertation, graduated, and started an awesome postdoc in a new town. It was also a very difficult year for my mental and physical health. We don’t talk about the cost of the hustle enough. In 2023, remember that each success comes with hard work!

Opening the sequel to a book and hoping for a “previously on”

As the break draws nearer, my email sign offs get more complex. So if you get a “May the peace and joy of the holiday season bless you and yours” just know I’ve completely checked out.

Interesting thread! Fun fact: the boy in the post is based on my grandfather.

Was Rockwell perfect? Nope! But it's important to contextualize an artist's work, especially when they were institutionally limited from expressing their personal views. His "aesthetics" may seem conservative today, but you can't judge an artist's politics by aesthetics alone. 🎨

This is tough. I had amazing advisors, genuinely loved my program, was able to go full time…and it’s still the hardest thing I’ve done. My advice is always to know your purpose for pursuing a PhD, something you can turn to during those dark and difficult hours to keep you going.

I often see depressing comments on how hard a PhD can be, with unconsiderate supervisors, excess workload, solitude and financial precarity... my experience is the total opposite: phd is probably the best period of my life. Am I alone? 😆? #phdvoice #phdchat @PhDVoice #phdlife

Word of the day is 'growlery' (1853, from Charles Dickens): a place you retreat to for the purposes of growling, muttering, and letting off steam.

Academics, I love you…but may I introduce you to the 7x7 rule?

Love the 3 sisters: corn, beans and squash!

As you gather with friends and family this Thanksgiving, think about the farm workers who contributed to each dish. Tell us your favorite ingredients and we will show you the skilled work behind it. #WeFeedYou

Remember Ronald McNair.

In 1959, police were called to a segregated library when a Black 9-year-old boy trying to check out books refused to leave, after being told the library was not for Black people. The boy, Ronald McNair, went on to became an astronaut. The library is also now named after him.

This 👇 “community over compliance”

First conference ✅ Second conference ✅ Two presentations in 24(ish) hours. I don’t not recommend it but I had a lot of fun and my head is still full of learning!

Tomorrow I’m driving to DC to present at APPAM then flying to Seattle for UCEA. I’m exhausted already 🙃

❤️

Light in darkness. Thanks to our students for lighting the way.
