Anytime you find yourself attracted to the myth of inevitable historical progress, remember that slavery was illegal in Georgia before it was legalized. We can go backwards, progress is not guaranteed, true democracy is a practice not a belief.

So U.S. uses backdoors in it's own Internet providers to spy on it's citizens. China says "don't mind if we do" and backdoors the backdoors. They sat for months undetected on the U.S. wiretap system for Verizon, AT&T, and more...

I have no idea why people didn't have stores of fuel and generators, and stocks of food and water. Anyway here's a totally unrelated poverty map of Appalachia.

I am very sympathetic to those slammed by Helene, and I pray for their safety and recovery. At the same time, how is it that in 2024, people who live in the paths of hurricanes STILL DON'T HAVE FOOD SUPPLIES? Not even for a few days? No water supplies? No backup fuel? That seems…

Chris Sharpe, a firefighter, captured these videos of elk from a high-fenced ranch frantically running for safety. It's not just humans that suffer because of the crises fossil fuels companies have created. No time to wait. #ActOnClimate

Watching Wall-E with my kids this morning I noticed in the opener that wind turbines were sticking out of the hills of trash. This is basically the world that @TheLastFarm is trying to warn us away from, a planet of renewable energy overtaken by a culture of overconsumption.

We need to find an answer to agriculture that doesn't destroy our watersheds.

America has become a nation of factory farms. How many factory farms are near you? How much manure is being produced? A new map by @foodandwater provides county level data. Here's the factory farm density of Illinois. What does that mean? Let's compare two counties...

Idea: everything that you like in the world, including artistic works, is really about making something in our society cheaper or more efficient, directly or otherwise. Otherwise it wouldn’t be successful enough for you to know about it. What is it making more efficient?

“Land only” global warming is already 2.29°C The way climate change data is usually presented—as a 30-year global average—massively undersells just how dire the situation is where people actually live & how fast the situation is deteriorating There is no time for half measures

Recently I learned that a global temp increase of 3C means a land temp increase of 6C(basically 10F.) I thought I was pessimistic enough, but maybe not.

Areas of fog can be seen on satellite imagery this morning. Some is the typical river valley fog, while areas have also formed on (and near) Lake Ontario. The fog will dissipate around 9 or 10 a.m. this morning.

Crypto positions itself to kill us all coming and going.

A strong government wouldn't bribe crypto miners not to work, it'd just seize their property, cut them off from the grid, and redistribute the graphics cards.

Are warrantless “defensive” searches of the #FISA Section 702 database for Americans' information constitutional? @NoahChauvin argues that the answer does not depend on whether the subject of the search is a victim. justsecurity.org/98741/fisa-def…

At the very least you would think the United States should be about not having kings. I really can't believe we have a VP candidate out there that is basically a monarchist.
