There is nothing safe about the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, but a fundamental misunderstanding of its impact on medicine. We have got to fix palliative care first and foremost, yet this Bill draws more resources away from providing care. I will vote against.
What troubles me most about @kimleadbeater’s bill is that it places a legal obligation on the Secretary of State to ensure that assisted dying is available to patients for whom he’s under no such duty to provide adequate palliative care. 🧵 bills.parliament.uk/bills/3774/pub…
Whatever your views on assisted dying, to be rushing through a bill this hastily - and with so little time for MPs to weigh, digest & reflect on its (as yet unpublished) contents - is absolutely the wrong way to go about legislating on such a profoundly important & complex issue.
I do not share the reported enthusiasm for the Assisted Dying Bill. And it is painfully late to be bringing forward a draft bill, with so little time ton consider its contents. theguardian.com/society/2024/n…

Each year in the UK, 600,000 people die - & they do so without euthanasia.Instead of demanding lethal injections, euthanasia campaigners should put their efforts into securing palliative care for the 240,000 who need it but are unable to receive it. Care and kill are not synonyms

These stats, just released, are a national scandal. Over 15,000 doctors applied to GP training this year. Yet @NHSEngland is letting only 4000 of them do so. Yes. That’s 11k potential new GPs lost to the NHS - when we’re crying out for GPs. Many replaced with PAs - madness.
Whatever you think of Assisted Dying, the *last* thing it should be is “rushed through”. This would be a very significant step which needs incredibly robust safeguards or the horrors of Canada and the Low Countries will definitely repeat here.
