Little progress has been made on reconstruction after the January 1st earthquake in Japan. I visited the Noto Peninsula to hear from people on how they feel things are going. Most locals that I spoke with shared a sense that they had been abandoned.

My latest for @UPI on the #kominka boom in #Japan. Even if up and moving to Japan makes little or no sense to most, there are a lot of difficulties in society globally that makes people want to dream. To these dreamers, Japan offers a case model. upi.com/4361732621054

My latest for @upi on the LDP defeat in Japan's lower house election. Sunday's results indicate that trust in the LDP hasn't been regained, and that the era where trust on its own was enough to hold a majority could be over.

My latest for @trtworld on the election shakeup in Japan.

Japan's prime minister pitched the idea of an "Asian NATO" to deter China but gained little support for this. My latest for @upi on this and the complex web of defense in the Asia Pacific region. upi.com/9751729906742 @RobertAlanWard @MikeStudeman @fccjapan

I received a government ad on my phone of a human/deer hybrid spreading awareness about weed overdose moments after a seeing a ministerial warning against meat products with an image of someone who seems to have packed their suitcase full of hamburgers. The culprit may be within.

This 31-star flag was used by Matthew Perry in 1853 and was the first American flag hoisted over Japan. In 1945 it was displayed on the USS Missouri during the ceremonies marking the end of WWII. Quite a lot of history witnessed by this object…

I made a J-pilgrimage to @mujschool to attend a three-day seminar on AI and its applications in media and journalism. Mizzou holds the oldest j-school in the world and has a deep connection with reporters covering Asia that spans over a century. Proud to be one of them!

Piece I wrote earlier this week for UPI. The idea that people have an aversion to subtitles to the point that they won't watch foreign language content is something largely imposed by the industry.
