"10 years ago today, people said we were crazy to pedestrianize Broadway 🇺🇸. Today, it would be crazy to bring the 🚗 cars back." ~ @JSadikKhan
Transportation @SecretaryPete: " If an underpass was constructed such that a bus carrying mostly Black and Puerto Rican kids to a beach, [...] in New York was designed too low for it to pass by, that that obviously reflects racism that went into those design choices."
This is a cycle path. It’s magnificent. Away from traffic. More please @NYC_DOT
"The city is not the problem; the city is the solution." —the late Jaime Lerner, Mayor of Curitiba. [Photo: trams in Finland]
Every mayor, council, chief planner, chief transportation official, etc who wants to PROVE they understand the role that cities & city halls play in mitigating the #ClimateCrisis should show their robust & fully funded plan to rapidly build a safe & complete bike network. #COP26
You might have seen this already, but it’s worth appreciating again. Very clever. #ClimateCrisis
The Dutch bike-train combination offers a more attractive—and sustainable—alternative to driving: 21% of bike-train trips replace car trips. 66% of bike-train users have car access but prefer not to use it. With facilities such as Utrecht Centraal Station, it’s easy to see why.
One of the most intriguing, and misused, street design & place-making ideas in the world is the Dutch #Woonerf, or living street. When I studied woonerfs while working in Groningen, I learned the key is design that essentially makes it impossible to drive faster than people walk.
From the separated cycle path to the (free) secure parking to the station platform to the railway carriage in less than four minutes. Over 650,000 Dutch people use the bike-train combination each day for good reason. The right choice is carefully designed to be the easy choice.
“Building more roads to prevent congestion is like a fat man loosening his belt to prevent obesity” — L. Mumford. The black hole of highway investment:
Pedal around places with great infrastructure for long enough, and you’ll often witness the most remarkable little things. Fully-grown adults momentarily losing themselves in the childlike emotion that made them fall in love with cycling in the first place: the simple joy of it.
Unlike Charleston, Savannah didn’t offload authority and responsibility for most city streets to the state DOT. A line was held against the asphalt industrial complex and beautiful, pervious, lower maintenance, traffic-calming brick streets were preserved.
If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via @thediscourse study. This isn’t just about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice. #citymakingmath
Acting as an elegant gateway to the small town of Oirschot is a beautiful wooden walking and cycling bridge: the Stönner-Meijwaardbrug. The gentle incline provides easy accessibility for carriages, mobility scooters and wheelchairs; while the steps offer pedestrians a shortcut.
This feels right. Let’s build inclusive cities 🙏🏾
Our periodic reminder that single family homes & apartment buildings can peacefully & beautifully co-exist in neighborhoods. They aren’t mutually exclusive. Pictured here: Painted Ladies — perhaps the most famous single family homes — right next to a beautiful apartment building
Every single city in North America needs to be working on transforming these 3 things in their zoning. Right now. - abolish zoning that only allows single detached housing - remove parking minimums or replace with smart incentives - create parking maximums Every. Single. City.
My kind of road diet: Two lanes of dining room, a buffer, and a bike lane.
