A key asymmetry of this era of American politics and how it’s covered is that Trump is expected to do bad and corrupt things, so when he does it barely qualifies as news. But Dems are expected to be beyond reproach, so anything that seems even slightly suspect is a huge scandal.

If only Joe Biden had not pardoned his son, Republicans like Crapo would be confronting Trump and demanding that he adhere to all the norms and constraints on the arbritrary exercise of presidential power that Trump has either already shattered, or signaled that he intends to.

Sen Crapo on whether nominees should get a full FBI background check: “My position is what President Trump decides to do is what I will support.”

For five years, I have been covering what is unquestionably the biggest criminal justice scandal in American history. Today it ended when the most corrupt cop in history took his life. But it's not over. A thread.

Biden pardoning his own son is a disastrous move politically. Now that he's done it, I'm worried the precedent it sets might finally push Trump to start showing contempt for established political norms and the rule of law

Thoughts on Hunter pardon: - I don’t love it, but I completely understand why he did it - with everything the incoming administration is telling us they’re going to do, we probably need to stop handcuffing ourselves with standards they won’t follow - I wish it wasn’t this way

If you think Biden flipflopping on Hunter pardon after Trump names Kash Patel his FBI Director is worse than Trump flipflopping on whether Project 2025 is the core of his policy agenda, you should turn in your journalism credentials and also your democracy ones.

Woodrow Wilson pardoned his brother-in-law, Hunter deButts. Bill Clinton pardoned his brother, Roger. Donald Trump pardoned his daughter’s father-in-law, Charlie Kushner. And just appointed him Ambassador to France. But tell me again how Joe Biden “is setting precedent”? 🤣🤣

Christine Jacobs Reposted

It's terrible politics and precedent but I'm going to be honest and say that the Trump team has been brutally clear they want revenge on their enemies, they are obsessed with Hunter in particular, and that would weigh like hell on me if I were his father and could protect him.

When Jane Mayer does a profile of you…you’re officially toast

.@JaneMayerNYer reports on a previously undisclosed whistle-blower report on Pete Hegseth’s tenure as the president of a veteran advocacy group, which indicates that Hegseth misused funds, harassed women, and was repeatedly intoxicated on the job. nyer.cm/6fFEl77

We’re not accepting complaints about the Hunter Biden pardon unless you also complained about the Steve Bannon, Michael Flynn, Roger Stone, and Paul Manafort pardons.

Rich Russians and Russian officials are very concerned about the information that Cyprus is allegedly planning to join NATO. It is known that many of them have assets, real estate there, and many relatives of the Russian leadership live there. This is what they write: "More and…

If Democrats flip CA13 and CA45, where they also lead, they’re on track for 215 House seats. The GOP would have 220. With Gaetz gone + Waltz and Stefanik slated to resign. A 217-215 majority, temporarily. Zero votes to spare; a single GOP defection tanks a non-bipartisan bill.

Big CA13 update: Adam Gray (D) just took the lead against Rep. John Duarte (R) by 105 votes.

Trump won a clear, convincing victory. But he and his allies are trying to pump it up into a "landslide," which it wasn't. With 49.997% of the vote, he fell short of a majority and his 1.6-point margin of victory is the 3rd smallest since the 19th century nytimes.com/2024/11/22/us/…

Regardless of what President-elect Trump wants, Senate Democrats hold the majority until the next Congress. It is part of our job to confirm qualified judges, and we will confirm many more Biden-Harris judges before Inauguration Day.

As a mom of two young girls, I can assure you Matt Gaetz couldn’t pass a background check to babysit my daughters—let alone to be Attorney General of the United States.
