I’ll be on sabbatical from mid-Aug 2024 for 1 yr, and we’re looking to sublet our beautiful place near Lausanne during that time. 🪢 Mobilizing my network to help me find trustworthy tenants. If you know of anyone, pls ask them to contact me directly: people.epfl.ch/robert.west 🙏
Super excited to share that I successfully defended my PhD thesis "Understanding Generalization and Robustness in Modern Deep Learning" today 👨🎓 A huge thanks to the thesis examiners @SebastienBubeck, @zicokolter, and @KrzakalaF, jury president Rachid Guerraoui, and, of course,…
We all know that AGI is coming, BUT adversarial examples are *still* not solved and scale is not all you need! Simple random search using logprobs of GPT-4 reveals that it has quite limited robustness. Short paper: andriushchenko.me/gpt4adv.pdf Code: github.com/max-andr/adver… 🧵1/n
Just a reminder that while many people could enjoy this week’s @NeurIPSConf, many other people couldn’t attend it simply because of the very very long US visa processing times. My US visa is under processing already for around 7 months (!)
Looks like the main reasons to get a PhD are: - if you want one - if it's your "passion" - if you want to be a professor - if you want to challenge yourself Are these really the most compelling reasons to spend 5+ years of your life in an underpaid, high-stress position?
I'm often asked "should I do a PhD?" I usually say no, because: - a PhD doesn't prepare you for most careers - a PhD isn't required for most careers - the risk to your mental health is high - the opportunity cost is high $$ How would you answer this question?
As his PhD advisor, I can’t recommend Manoel strongly enough. Whoever is lucky enough to snatch him on the job market will be blessed for years to come! Buy one, get five!
I’m hitting the job market looking mainly for tenure-track asst. professor positions (2024)! 🚨👨🔬 My core research informs how we should curate content on online platforms — and I’m also interested in how large language models will impact on the Web in the upcoming years.
