Gustavo Gutiérrez, the father of liberation theology, has passed. A superb mind and heart, he was stitched up by the anti-communist zeal of JPII and Ratzinger in the Vatican international.la-croix.com/religion/gusta…

"Have you dined with us before? The benzedrine and raw meat will come as a sharing plate..."

Sydney’s Bennelong restaurant is prepping for a private dinner tonight with Jordan Peterson and no less than three ex prime ministers. What does it say about the state of mainstream Liberal thought… Tomorrow’s column: afr.com/rear-window/be…

In all @theAge predictable frenzy of birthday self-congratulation, no mention of how Tony Parkinson, John Spooner & Pamela Bone cheered on the slaughter of tens of thousands of Iraqis back in the day.

Adrian Rawlins, the only Arena contributor to be immortalised in bronze (his article in the 1966 winter edition suggested Highway 61 Revisited ‘places Dylan alongside Mozart'). Fittingly, the statue is just down the road from Arena's old Argyle St, Fitzroy, premises.

The Wage Earners' Welfare State: a minimum wage + maximum chips.

Ever found more air than chips in your chip packet? More air, less product, same price. It's called shrinkflation, and it's ripping Australians off. We’re fixing it, making sure you get good value at the checkout with stronger unit pricing and big penalties for supermarkets…

Local pickle from local lemons. Tart and salty, but not too hot (which is what I'm thinking of having the confectioner stencil on my next birthday cake).

The Maoist organ 'Australian Communist' denounces 3 of the original 'Arena' editors as having been 'vociferous revisionists' in 1956—which, if true, shows a certain political precocity on John Legge's part given he was only 14 years old at the time of Khrushchev's speech.

Mining industry bleating is misleading. Labor’s laws have ended the gaming of labour hire through fake in-house operations undercutting negotiated agreements, and allowed multi-employer bargaining like in many OECD countries. abc.net.au/news/2024-09-0…

The Member for Maribyrnong announcing his retirement in the lead up to the 1983 election. 'I'm pleased for him' said his wife, Shirley, 'Politicians lead such aberrant lives'.

Academics in Australia need to identify as teachers; data entrists; website designers; photocopying clerks; pastoral care workers; administrative committee members; ethics adjucators. On top of this morass of roles, identifying as a "writer" helped keep my childhood dreams alive

Fellow academics: do you self-identify as writers? It has occurred to me that many of my dear friends who are academics AND have written at least ONE single- authored book self-identify as writers. Do you?

Me, contemplating the site of minor triumphs, cheap thrills, dashed hopes, and lost expectations: the soon to be demolished Union House at the University of Melbourne.

I helped this bloke wrangle his memoir. A remarkable trajectory of activism from pre-election; multiple ministries; post-politics. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/aj…
