New book is out! I explore the impact of neoliberalism on inequality and the welfare state. Neoliberalism has not only changed welfare. It changes the politics of how welfare is contested – and the strategies for winning equality anthempress.com/the-politics-o…

A new study finds that up to 91% of planetary boundary breaching can be attributed to the top 20% of global consumers. There is no such thing as sustainability without expropriating the rich.
When liberals accuse Trump of having done weird stuff they forget to mention that they totally followed him in all aspects of foreign policy. 1 Continued and expanded (by much) the anti-China legislation 2. Selectively increased tariffs (more than Trump) 3. Expanded economic…
Not seen this before. Really shocking from @dannydorling's 'Seven Children'. Average height of five-year-old boys, 1985–2020
"rising inequality is legitimated by the popular belief that the income gap is meritocratically deserved: the more unequal a society, the more likely its citizens are to explain success in meritocratic terms... the less important... a person’s family wealth and connections."
This book is fantastic. I'm only a bit more than 1/3 through and hooked. Blinder is a great writer, but also extremely candid about the process of macroeconomic management. The insights on the relation of academia and policy officials is also excellent.
Thank you 'The Future of Everything' for sharing an exclusive extract 📚 'Politics, Inequality and the Australian Welfare State After Liberalisation'. Check it out➡️tinyurl.com/2ttzz98u @bspiesbutcher @Macquarie_Uni
Today I'll be presenting on welfare and inequality after neoliberalism, from my recent book, to the UNSW SPRC series. All on Zoom, 3-4pm, if you're interested. eventbrite.com.au/e/welfare-and-…
Looking forward to hosting (with a great team) this critical discussion of housing supply and planning reform debates. @AlistairSisson @socsci_mq @Macquarie_Uni @UNSWCityFutures @ryanvdn
Congrats to Prof Kristian Ruming, Prof Bill Randolph, Dr Alistair Sisson & Dr Ryan van den Nouwelant who will host a workshop that will interrogate housing supply discourse + more.
Just out w @markriboldi & @plvhayman on Independent and Minor Party MPs in AJPS. Going back to 1970 we show the rise of non-major party MPs is not new, preferential voting helps, they are getting more organised and they effect ALP/LNP differently. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
Excited to announce my review of @bspiesbutcher's 'Politics, Inequality and the Australian Welfare State After Liberalisation' will be published in The Economics and Labour Relations Review! This fascinating work analyses the development of the Australian Welfare State since 1980
I want to briefly talk about one of my favorite papers and how it relates to the U.S. election. Short version: It's the predistribution, stupid
Get ready for the next round of sellers’ inflation! This time coordinated by tariffs.
Advice to shipping container traders to prepare for the higher tariffs under a Trump administration, via @ConXchange:
Brilliant work on the changing models of independent candidate organisation and background in Oz from @plvhayman @markriboldi and @bspiesbutcher Check it out!!
Great to see this research out Well done @plvhayman (who is researching Teals as part of her PHD) and colleagues tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.108… @simonahac @zdaniel @latrobe
Inflation decided this election. In our age of overlapping emergencies we urgently need a new inflation fighting toolbox. If the only way to fight inflation is to hike interest rates with the goal of throwing people out of work, we push voters into the arms of the far right.
Good thing the RBA is keeping vigilant against a wages break out.
If the RBA's forecasts are correct, Australians will have 2011 level real wages in December 2026. Chart: @leithvo
Hard to overstate just how rapid the changes in US party coalitions have been. The Democrats are now the party of high education *and* high income voters. Just 12 years ago, the inverse was true. On these terms, the Trump coalition was closer to Obama 2008 than the Harris one!
Wowee! What a wild Senate Estimates. 🔴 @ourANU VC says "almost 5000 employees" - but 2023 was 5214 FTE. They've shed more than 200 FTE in 2024 *before* 'Renew ANU'. 🔴 VC attempts to distance herself from the Chancellor's comments that staff are "inefficiencies", just RFI. 🧵
To those struggling tonight. You are not alone, you are loved, and you deserve to be here 💛
